Default Over land or by air?

Ive priced out some flights from Greece to Egypt and there around $330CAD. I was wondering if anyone knows if it would be cheaper overland through Syria, Jordan, and Israel... if anyone knows or can point me in the right direction to land transportation so I can look it up myself that would be great.

Dude, depending on how much time you have - travelling on land is waaaaay cheaper.

Are you going from Greece to Egypt? That sounds like a GREAT trip. Last time I touched down in Athens, and travelled by land and sea until I got to Damascus.

I guess if you add them all together, Ferries/trains/buses will add up to the same price as a flight, but I mean, its so much more satisfying to get somewhere by surface travel. Flying sort of seems like cheating to me.

There's nothing like riding in a bus in Syria past Hama and seeing that sign that says LEFT: Baghdad, RIGHT: Damascus

Well if I were to go by land I would go through Turkey, then south from there. I would have to cut out a couple of places in EU if i were to go by land however, Im thinking Poland and Hungry might have to go in that case.

I would say sounds good, but I hear great things about Budapest.

The ride from Istanbul, Turkey to Aleppo, Syria is 35 hours, btw. But in a sleeper, its actually not that bad.

It was pretty cheap... I think it was like 40 or 50 bucks Canadian. It is the train, and its a beautiful ride. Its the Orient Express and it passes by many ruined castles that I suspect no tourist ever goes to.

It would have been a couple of hours shorter if the Turkish Army had not stopped us at the border and made us wait because "they weren't finished eating lunch" - no joke.

Btw, those trains have no food service, so stock up on bread and liquids.

Here's a great summary of trains in Turkey http://www.seat61.com/Turkey2.htm

No problem. Here's another great site for MidEast travel: http://www.travelindependent.info/m_east.htm

That sounds like quite a trip. Actually I've always wanted to do a trip that would take a southern route to damascus... start in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, then back to "the Sham" (Damascus).
