last minute international flights?

Is there any way to get an international flight at the last minute without being screwed on cost? Barring any unforseen issues I should get getting a job as of tomorrow, and I was thinking of trying to zoom off for 5-6 days somewhere either tomorrow night or on Friday.

But when I look at airfares they're reeeallly high on that short notice. Most of the airline's that offer specific promotions on their websites require an advance booking. There are plenty of "last minute travel" websites but I don't want to have to propose a city, I want to just be told the cheapest places I can go!

Any advice?

Maybe try calling the airlines directly. I'm sure they would rather give you a deal than have an open seat.... Good luck, and hope you get that flight:)

What I'm thinking now is this is a good use for frequent flyer miles. There's a 100 fee for booking within 7 days but that is not too bad and you can book up to a few hours in advance of a flight!

OK people, I'm 95% sure I'm going to Ecuador leaving Friday morning...whose flying down to meet me!

Jungles, cloud forests, beaches, surfing, volcanos, coral reefs, and hot springs...book now! :)

How much did you end up paying for the flight ? Was it one of those last minute bargains ?

Bon voyage !

I paid $129.72!

It was a frequent flyer ticket, so it was just $100 for short notice booking plus security fees & taxes. I did have to use 70k miles though instead of 35k due to the scheduling. If I could have returned a couple days later the 35k miles would have done the trick. On the plus side, the 70k tickets allow changes in route, dates, etc with no fee. After I purchased it I was able to the immediately do a route change so I fly into Quito and out of Guayaquil instead of round tripping from Quito. South America seems to be the sweet spot for using miles from the US, you get a really good value for your miles!

And incidentally, the best I could find for checking airfares was farecompare.com, which will let you set a home city and then displays all fares from cheapest to most expensive by region (Europe, South America, Asia, etc). You can even narrow it down by week. A pretty good tool.
