hi all!

i live in the halifax area of nova scotia, and fly out of the halifax international airport. does anyone have any suggestions on where on earth to find REASONABLE flights?! my god! i can't get over some of the figures i'm finding. so far, i've only been checking aircanada, flightcenter, cheaptickets, and expedia because i don't really know what else is out there.

help, before i go broke!

OH, also, very important question!

how far in advance do you book your flights to generally get the best deal?

say you are going away next summer...when would you start seriously shopping for flights?

Air Transat has flights leaving from Halifax.

I know it's frustrating when all the best deals are in Toronto !

Depending where you're flying, you might check that country's airline's website. For example, Quantas almost always has deals of one kind or another that wont show up on expedia (or even their own regular search engine). You have to go to the promotions area of the website.

Another thing I've done is buy two independent tickets. For example maybe it's cheaper to get a round trip to Boston on one airline and then find a different ticket from Boston to wherever you intend to go. I saved a lot of money doing this once, but then I almost missed the pricey long distance flight due to flight delays...so there is risk too.

Dude i totally feel your pain, its cheaper for me to fly to europe from the 'fax than it is for me to fly home! Its ridiculous, I actually got a better deal going into the flight centre office, they're generally pretty good and it' would probably be better for you since your travelling with a family. Westjet and AirCanada's websites generally have better deals, sign up for their emails, you get notifcations when they're having sweet sales (westjet often has one night onlys for 50% off on ALL flights) so its good to be in the know other than that all you can do is watch for deals, cause the prices are going nowhere but up

which i love...but there are some that I'm jealous of from vancouver or montreal...

Where were you thinking of travelling to? perhaps you can get down to montreal first for a cheap flight?

You could try travelalerts.ca, depending on where you're going.
Prices are insane flying out of the east coast, especially with all the extra fees Air Canada are tacking on.

Air Transat is your best bet, I'm from Halifax too, I've flown to Frankfurt for $203 one way tax in, got to Florida with them for $19 ($120 with tax) one way. TO is the holy grail of cheap flights though. I've gone to Glasgow and back for 375 tax in, (cheaper than Halifax at the time). That was in summer of '05, taxes are a bit higher now coming back, particularly from the UK.

Avoid Air Canada for Europe as a general rule, a lot of the US companies serve Halifax, you can get a connection to Boston or Newark and then go. I'm going to Germany in 3 weeks and doing just that (from Alberta mind you). Air Canada was 1500+, with United I'm connecting in Chicago then off to Germany. At $1024 certainly not the deals I'm used to, but I suppose what one would call reasonable.
