Open Return flights
Looking at an open return flight to Australia. Not sure what to do or how to go about finding out. I've googled and found very little help. Anyone have any luck with this before, even to Europe?

Have you tried calling STA travel ? I know they used to have open tickets to Australia.

Yea I see they offer some "blue" special or something. For the time I was looking at, it was 600 more than the regular ticket. And apparently Qantas will change I guess for 200(or free). So I guess it would just make sense to change it at a later date.
Regardless, thanks for the tip.

It's pretty easy to get a year long open ticket. Sometimes you have to pay a little bit more for one. But usually you don';t have to pay to change the date etc...or if you do it's $100 or so .Just ask the flight attendant. I never travel without a flexible ticket. There are so many unknowns when travelling that it's good to have a date change option!

Thanks for the help, I guess I could just go to the various airlines and ask them, but I figured I'd come here first for some first hand experience.
Thanks again.

In my opinion, you'd have better results by contacting agencies directly because they have deals with airlines. When I was searching for my open ticket Canada-Sydney, I used three agencies, and the best price was offered by STA Travel for a Malaysia Airlines one-year return ticket, with stopovers in Germany and Malaysia.
How long will you be gone ? I'm asking that because I doubt you could change dates for more than a few days difference from the original date. If you want weeks or months difference, I'd make sure it's possible before purchasing a regular return ticket.
p.s. Reading my post, it sounds like I'm promoting STA , but it's not intentional. I don't work for them !

If I would leave, it would probably be either May/June for 9-12 months, or December for the same length. Coming from either Chicago, NYC, or LA. Doesn't really matter which. Whatevers cheaper though, because I know I wont have much funds by then.
But regardless, I'll most likely end up in Perth, where my mate Mike lives. And try to find work there for awhile.

STA is amazing...I was quite pleased with the deal I got from them ($1080 return ticket to south africa and only $25 to change the date of flight, plus any change in the cost of ticket which apparently only really incurs on the way there not usually for the return time from that part of the world-yes!!)
