I'm trying to book tickets for my trip (june 1st - 30th) and I was wondering if anyone with experience could help me out.

My itinerary starts in London and ends in Italy but since prices for flying from Italy to JFK (NY) seem a LOT higher I dont mind taking cheep flight back up to leave from London. Heres what I was looking at:
Round trip JFK to LHR - $634 from STA Travel on Air India
or
One way JFK to LHR - $231 from STA Travel on Air India
One way LHR to JFK - £209 (~$380) from STA on American Airlines (you cant book 1 way trips from UK to US on the US website, only the UK website)

Just to save the hastle of booking the two tickets seperatly I was just going to buy the round trip, but for only $540 i could do this:
One way JFK to LHR - $231 from STA Travel on Air India (same flight as round trip)
One way DUB to LHR to JFK - $309 from Expedia on BMI (to LHR) and then American Airlines (to JFK)

So why is it cheeper to fly from Dublin to London to NY than from London to NY? The cheepest flight one way I can find from LHR to JFK is $550+. Is it possible for me to book the ticket from DUB to LHR to JFK but just show up at LHR and catch the 2nd leg of my flight?

travelocity.com. put in nyc to lon (that searches all the airports in the area), and select the flexible date option. set it to between today and june and see what you get. I found a r/t non stop for 350 before taxes on american airways. You'd have to leave around may 28 and come back on June 28 though. check it out. those things change quickly.

Yah I know its very last minute but I'm kind of restricted by my travel mates job search; He wasn't sure he was able to go until this Friday. Anway, thanks for finding those rates on travelocity, but it seems like everything I select in those date ranges says 'There are no more flights for the cities you selected' so I think I'm out of luck there. I'd leave a bit earlier but I graduate on May 27th so May 28th would be pushing it.

Do you know what other European cities are cheep to fly out of? I'll fly out of pretty much anywhere that's closer to Italy?

It's actually probably cheaper to fly from DUB to NYC.
Try that first.

hmmmm... I keep getting a flight from nyc>lon for 223 and then it disappears. and comes back. weird.
Im not finding anything better than the 350, even looking into other cities. I keep hearing Dublin is the cheap place to fly into, but its not much different than london. It kind of sucks... I dont think you'll be able to get much better than you've already found since its late and you cant be all that flexible and its the high season. I'd suggest going to the STA office on monday, armed with your knowledge. Some of the best deals Ive ever gotten were through an sta agent. Even better deals than on the sta site.

I'd love to but it looks like the closest one is about 6 hours away Oh well I might as well bite the bullet and fly round trip to london for the $634 or so.
Would it be totaly crazy to try to take the train back from Italy to London? Im guessing it would end up cheeper to fly.

It probably would be cheaper to fly. check out RyanAir and EasyJet for cheap inter-european flights. I went from London to Rome for a weekend for something like 30 quid round trip. Sometimes you can pick up flights for just the price of the taxes, though that is unlikely in the summer.

look at possibly flying out of dublin. its usually cheaper and since ryanair is based out of dublin you can get there pretty easy from almost anywhere in western europe. check out aer lingus as they usually have good deals on one ways into new york. i recently bought a one way from delta for $199.00, although i think that was a special that is over now, but u just have to look around.

flying into and out of italy is crazy expensive for some reason, but just search different airports around europe. with some of the cheap airlines there and if your flexible and willing to change your travel plans a little you can sometimes find good deals. i've also had good luck getting flights out of frankfurt.

if you look at expedia.com or cheaptickets.com i would also suggest that once you find a deal, to go to the airlines website directly. normally if i find a ticket on a travel website i can get it for 10 or 20 bucks cheaper by buying it directly (not true 100% of the time, but i've had luck with it)
