Oh damn you, Im going to cottage next weekend and this makes it so much harder to wait. Going over to Grand Bend then up to the islands in the North for a week, gonna do exactly what these pictures suggest. Except the bikini, Ill stay away from that this time.

And yeah, pure Canadian, I mean, if you dont like going to the cottge, you should just get the hell out of the country haha

xanthuos 08-02-2005 02:44 PM

What's that I see in your hand there, Molson Girl? What brand of beer might that be?

MolsonGirl 08-02-2005 08:50 PM

Yeah I was tackling an entire 24 of MGD for myself that weekend.. I just wanted a beer that required a bottle opener... meh... also something easy to drink as I was drinking all day and night

mmmm breakfast beers

xanthuos 08-02-2005 11:04 PM

Yet another die-hard Canadian drinking an American beer...

I hear the beer-bashing all the time...and yet, when I go to the LB, what do I see in people's carts? Coors Light and MGD as much as I see Canadian or Kokanee.

pinion 08-03-2005 10:53 AM

Awsome pictures, MG! Looks like a great place to chill out in the summer!

I know, its so sad. But really, all those large companies are all the same in the end. Its the same shit just slight percentage variations. The only American beer I have a hard time puttin down is Bud Light, its just garbage. The real die hards of Canadian beer arent the ones drinkin Labatt or Molson, theyre drinking stuff like Steam Whistle, just micro brewerie brand.

Actually strike that, the real Canadian beer lovers I know just brew their own haha

MolsonGirl 08-03-2005 02:33 PM

Well I'm normally a Keiths Girl... but I wanted something a little lighter for drinking copius amounts... I can't drink that much Canadian beer.... it's just too strong.. I'd be off my rocker hammered all day... that's why MGD and other American beers are better.... less %

TheJake 08-03-2005 02:44 PM

I am pretty much mad at everyone that isn't stuck in the desert with me. But especially you molson.

This is what I'm talking about...the perception that Canadian beers (excluding Quebec beers) have more alcohol!

B)

IT IS INCORRECT!!!

Based on alcohol by volume, here is how Canadian beers compare to US beers.
I will use the measurements of the versions SOLD in most provinces/states of the respective countries.

Sold In Canada
Molson Canadian - 5.0% (source: molson.com)
Canadian Light - 4.0% (source: molson.com)
Labatt Blue - 5.0% (source: labatt.com)
Blue Light - 4.0% (source: labatt.com)
Kokanee - 5.0% (source: labatt.com)
Moosehead Lager - 5.0% (source: moosehead.com)
Moosehead Light - 4.0% (source: moosehead.com)
*Keith's India Pale - 5.0% (source: okliquor.ca)* (so it's not stronger %-wise)

Sold In The US
Budweiser - 5.0% (source: anheuserbusch.com)
Bud Light - 4.2% (source: budlight.com)
Coors - 5.0% (source: coors.com)
Coors Light - 4.2% (source: coors.com)
Miller Genuine Draft - 4.7% (source: millerbrewing.com) (most sites report as 5.0%)
Miller Lite - 4.2% (source: millerbrewing.com)

So there you have it...with the exception of MGD (even though a lot of sites report the alcohol content as 5.0%), the major brewery regular beers (both Canadian and US) have an ABV measurement of 5.0%. The major American light beers actually have an ABV measurement of 4.2%, while major Canadian light beers have a LOWER ABV measurement of 4.0%.

So how exactly is Canadian beer stronger? I won't dispute that some Canadian beers taste better than the major US beers (I like Kokanee, but even that is regional, comparable to a good-tasting regional brew in the US like Blue Moon or Shiner Bock), but as far as alcohol content is concerned, with one exception, the most popular US beers are equal or stronger than the most popular Canadian beers.

Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, and Oklahoma DO have certain restrictions limiting the alcohol content to not more than 3.2%...but that is only for sales in grocery and convenience stores. Last time I checked, I can't buy beer in Safeway or the local 7-Eleven in Saskatchewan, and I don't think you can buy it at the local gas station in Ontario either, can you? In the states that have those ridiculous laws, you can buy full-strength beer at liquor stores, which usually have hours similar to the Liquor Board's hours here in SK...closing at 9 or 10 p.m. Granted, here in SK, we have off-sale where you can get full-strength beer until 3:00 a.m....but I don't ever plan on living in those 6 states, Tennessee's liquor laws are much better and so are Illinois'!

The idea that Canadians drink a lot more beer than Americans is ALSO incorrect. The 1999 statistics have Canadian beer consumption at 85.3 litres per capita. In comparison, the 1999 statistics I was able to find have US beer consumption at 84.4 litres per capita. Encompasing less than 1 litre difference, it's fair to say that both nations consume approximately the same amount of beer (since 2002 statistics actually have Canadian beer consumption down to 84.7 litres).

Just tired of the "claims" that Canadian beer is stronger! Canadians are always bitching about how Americans are so ignorant of how things are in Canada...well, here's ONE instance of the pot calling the kettle black! All through college, I was drinking Natural Ice & Keystone Ice & others, and they were stronger (5.5-5.9%) and a helluva lot cheaper than what I'm drinking here.

MolsonGirl 08-03-2005 09:34 PM

Wow easy there tiger... you're at a 20 I need ya at a 10... lets drop this beer topic before X takes someone out with a bottle opener.

Beer is good... (except bud... I'm sorry I hate the stuff... DESPITE being the same % )

Cheers

xanthuos 08-04-2005 12:26 AM

I don't like Budweiser either. Gives me a headache...so we agree there!

I went a little off my rocker there, but a proud Yank can only take his beer being insulted so much...especially on the basis of incorrect facts ;)

Contrary to popular belief, it isn't always snowing in Canada. In fact, IIRC, Canada does experience about 8 days off from the white stuff every year. Miss MolsonGirl picked the right 4 days for her break. Rest assured, its likely to be a white-out blizzard there any minute now with Eskimos, dog sleds, and guys that sound like the McKenzie brothers running about calling each other hosers.

:D
