Was curious, for those of you that have spent any time in egypt, about what would a decent budget per day be? Im thinking like 40 - 50 USD??

Also, I had a question about claiming things. Since I will have to go through customs when flying between continents, do I have to claim EVERYTHING I got in Europe when I go to egypt, then EVERYTHING I got when I go back to Europe. (As in the things I bought in Europe before I went to egypt and also the stuff I got in egypt when I go back to europe?) And then Europe stuff + Egypt stuff when I fly back to the US??

Sorry if the second one is a dumb question, but I was curious. I hope it makes sense!

first of all, i'm not normally a supporter of the ISIC card becasue i have found it mostly useless in all of my travels EXCEPT! in egypt. the ISIC card is totally INVALUABLE there, you have to get one. they're like $25 here in the states but only about $10 if you get one in cairo. you literally save 50% on enterance to every major tourist site and it pays for itself almost immediately.

as far as budget goes, i was just there for 9 days in march and i only spent $500! i wasn't really on a budget either. i stayed at a nice-ish b&b and took taxis all over the place. on two days i hired a cab all day long and also went to three of the different pyramid sites in cairo. i ate out at a couple of nice restaurants and that $500 included souvenier shopping too. anyway, i think your estimate of $40-50 a day is spot on. now, if you plan to go up river at all, that could increase... overnight train travel is really expensive (to the tune of $100usd r/t from cairo to luxor or aswan); if you're willing to go without a proper bed though, and just ride in a regular seat, it gets cheap again. have a great time, egypt was great!

The goyim should be able to offer some tips once he takes his trip here in a few days as well. Granted, he's doing it up 4* all the way, but it's still cheap in Egypt to do it that way!

I was thinking 40 - 50 was kinda high....

I was honestly hoping for 20 - 30 lol i'll be low on funds at that point.

Im getting ready to go with a study abroad group... Many of our costs are already factored in (hotel, most trasnport, admission fees) and our profs told us to figure at most $15 a day, unless we were going to do some mad shopping. They take students every summer, and have lived in cairo for years and years... My guidebook on Egypt says you can get by on everything with 15-20, but you have to be reallly careful and cheap. It suggests several hostels, I can send them to you if you care. I love you Joan, and I admire you... hehe but your backpacking style could be described as a little bourgeois...
