In early June I'm Planing on doing some travelling in Eastern Europe. I study in France, so I can get a flight to Budapest for about 50 EU. I plan to start in Hungary and make my way through Romania to Bucharest then to Varna Bulgaria on the black sea. From there I want to go to Sophia, Belgrade Sarajevo and then to Dubrovnik for 2 weeks at the end before heading back to Paris and the to Canada.

I've got about 2000 - 2500 EU. Is that enough to stay at decent places eat 1 meal a day at a resteraunt and drink a couple nights a week?

Thanks

Oh yeah, probably the most important part. I want to spend a month travelling from Budapest to Sarajevo then 10 - 14 days in Dubrovnik. So the whole trip would be 6 weeks

Merci

From my experience, which was a while ago now (2002) and from what I've been reading, that should be plenty. In fact, you can live it up with that amount.

ok you could easily spend 1500 euros in budapest in 1 week if you want to stay at fancy hotels such as the gellert and eat fancy meals in restaurants! However i can recommend some really cheap places in Budapest if you want to start here, if you dont mind staying in hostels i can help here as well! there are some great restaurants in Budapest if you stay away from the tourist areas. If you eat where the Hungarians eat you will find that the food is alredy prepared and then they warm it up in the microwave believe me this is some of the best food you can buy for your forints! you could also try heading down to Kaposvar and doing the route the other way around you mentioned. hit me with some more wuestions and i will be happy to help

Im definitly going to be staying at hostels for the most part. I of course want to see all the tourist stuff, but I also want to just hang out and experience the culture. I've been hoarding as much money as possible this semester basically eating french bread (which isnt that bad) so I can travel somewhat comfortably in the summer.

What are some major attractions in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia that I shouldn't miss. And what are some good hostels to stay in? private rooms or dorms doesnt really matter.

ok the hostel i stayed in budapest was called central backpackeing king or something like that it can be found on the travelpunk pages. It was reasonably priced but the location was excellent!

If you are staying in Budapest personal highlights of things to see would be:

Hosok tere (heroes square) and the surrounding zoo gardens fake castle etc (if you check out my photos on the gallery there are some photo's there)

Szechenyi baths much better than the tourist ones on Gellert and this is where the guys actually play chess in the bath!

Houses of Parliament which do tours and they have St Stephens Crown in there

St stephens Church

The National Museum at Kalvin Tere metro station its free and has amazing exhibits!) Hungary has some of the best museums i have been to, even there exhibit in Auschwitz is the best!

The castle district

Citadella

The National Opera House (you can get cheap tickets here for ballet and opera)

Outside of Budapest the towns of Szetendre and Godollo are 30-45 mins away on the metro

Other towns to visit:

Eger for its wine region

Kaposvar (birth place of Imre Nagy)

Debrecen

Miskolc for the warmth of the Roma

Lake Balaton particularly thiany

I'm probably the wrost here for budgeting, I went mad in Eastern Europe eating, drinking, going out everynight, buying rounds, buying more drink at those plases on the side of the street, buying big bags of smoke. I stayed in Czeck for 2 weeks and spent close to €600, that's the max a backbacker can get through in two weeks I'd say, I chalenge anyone to spend that amount of money there.

So by that reckoning six weeks would cost €1800 max! if your going on a complete bender.
