Opportunity Costs

Okay, I hate my job. It doesn't pay enough and there isn't room for growth. However, the money I was going to get from it would have allowed me to buy a small peice of property and stuff. It gives me my independence.

But, I hate my job. I want to go to school in the fall if I can get into the design prog, but it's going to be another 4 years before I can earn a real wage again! This is kinda bumming me out alittle. My parents said it's not an issue if I have to live at home, but it's hard to just be waiting.

I know it'll probably be worth it, but maybe I am just sad at what I have to do. lol.

P.S. I am glad I did work for a few years, because I probably would have never come to this site if I didn't have money for travel! That's like 4 years of no real travelling though. *Sigh*

When will you hear about school?
Can you invest the money you're currently earning, or would that pay for school?
What will you do if you don't get into the programme?
Will the experience you're gaining from this job allow you to transfer to something more satisfying in the future?

Nope, I'm still at work. I haven't given any sort of notice yet.

I dunno, probably in the next month or so. I have to submit a portfolio after the initial acceptance, so probably might take awhile.

Yeah, I'm stay at work right now to put away the few grand I'll need to get by for schooling.

If I don't get in, probably stay at work or try to get into a similar program (Like fine art) so the next year I can reapply.

Well the experience I'm getting now helps with my schooling and a future career I'd like. I'd like to get into more design stuff and website design etc, and right now I work at an internet provider.

Four years without travelling. But I mean if I can get a great job once I finish school, maybe I can take ALOT more trips than the ones I could do while at this current job. And maybe like my job more. Heh.

Well it sounds like you've got a pretty good situation going, then, I'd say. You've got job security (boring) until you find out about your schooling (which boring job will pay for), and the experience will actually help you down the road. Sounds like you've only got to stick it out for a few more months 'til you find out about this year's schooling - and knowing that it's only for a little while makes it much more bearable. Instead of thinking "Oh, I hate this job" every morning when you go to work, try thinking along the lines of "This job is helping me achieve my dreams." That may change your attitude about it a bit in the short run. Then, once you know about school for this term you can either 1) work through the summer stashing away the money for school and leave on great terms with a stellar reference, or 2) if you don't get in this year, start looking for something else that will be more fulfilling and keep you going until you get into the programme you want.

The prospect of four years without travelling is pretty depressing, but like you say, the degree could open doors to jobs that offer a lot more income and time to travel as you want. It does sound like a long time at first, but heck, you'll be so busy, excited and exhausted in school that the time will pass pretty quick and before you know it, you'll be planning an awesome graduation trav-o-rama.

Thanks Tumble! What you said sounds alot like the speech I've give myself, but it's always nice to here it from another person. Hee hee.

I am really excited about the program and although I think my current job is okay, it's just so limited and dead-end (Plus my supervisor is well..) anways.

I just have to stick in there. Hee hee!
