I am thinking about purchasing a International Student Identity Card as it gives you discounts on Hostels, entertainment, transportation ect. The card costs $25US I was just wondering if the card is really worth it, I mean are the discounts and such reliable or will you be arguing with the manager at the hostel for you discount?

On the subject of cards, I would also like to know your opinions on the Hostelling International card. It looks like they have some great benefits and its free for me since I am under 18.

in all the traveling i have done through europe and asia - the isic card didn't mean shit. imo, certainly not $25 worth...

BUT in all the research i have done for my upcoming trip to egypt - the isic card seems invaluable. 30% off their (expensive ass!) train travel, 50% off most major sites, etc. i'm gonna get one for sure this time, but once i'm in egypt - they're supposedly only $9 there.

I would have to respectfully disagree with Joan. The ISIC card gets you valuable discounts on admissions prices to museums and other attractions all over Europe. Sometimes there is a hostel discount, but that is less common. I used my expired one all the time while in London and Europe, they rarley check. Sometimes simply a college ID will be enough to get the student discount but often they do require the ISIC card.

out of sall the research i did for that card, it really does look worth it. if it isnt, eh, its $25.. not THAT much. you're bound to save at LEAST that amount if you travel enough and see enough attractions...

Yeah, it also depends on where you go and if you remember to use it. There were quite a few places that didn't accept a student discount when we asked. It was great in Ireland on the railways and in college towns. So, really look up the areas you'll be going and see what places offer discounts and if they're places you'll be going.

Int'l hosteling card - don't bother. You don't need it.

I disagree, as you'll be under 18 the card is free so why not get it? I got my free card and it was really useful for a couple of hostels because you get discounted rates with it. I'd definitely make the effort to get one seeing as you have absolutely no disadvantage to it...

In some places (at least in Europe), ISIC is the only student identification they'll recognize (eg. museum discounts, train tickets). I may just be repeating what others have said though! Another card I saved a lot with (it came free with my eurail pass) was VIP Backpackers. I think it's worth checking out!

This is exactly right. ISIC card is sometimes the ONLY card places will accpet. I saved myself tons of money with it, especially buying flights within Europe.

You can use ISIC when buying inter-european airfare?

I always got asked if I was under 26 when buying tickets around Europe, I said yes and they gave me the discount, never asking for proff.
