Hey there,

I have of course a question about budget. Okay, here is my situation. I Leave on the 16th of sept on a Contiki tour for 16 days. The tour is completly paid for all my accomidations and two meals/day and main attractions.

After my tour I will be backpacking for 27 days. I am for sure spending about 5 days in Amsterdam for ancestor reasons, after that, I'm not quite sure. I'll just play it by ear. So after the Flight and Tour, how much do you think I should bring? I have not paid for any of my transpertation or sleeping arrangements I like to casually drink, want maybe one restaurant meal per day (supper). I hope to be able to do a little shopping (souvieners and stuff), will be staying in mostly hostels and B&B maybe a hotel once or twice I guess I just don't want to have to rough it too bad. I just want to live casually (money wise) for the six weeks. So spending money on the tour, and living costs while backpacking how much do you think I'll need? Sorry such a hard question. I'm thinking maybe 5000CAD.
Thanks for any advice.

Holly.

Hey there, welcome! Good for you, going off on your own after the Contiki tour. You'll get a decent taste for what you do and don't want to see, and when you're finally free you can go hog wild and do whatever you want.

I would say plan on spending at least $75 CAD per day plus the cost of transport between cities. That's a decent budget estimate in my (not altogether extremely exalted) opinion. If you can spend more, go for it!

Welcome to the boards, btw.

At this point, 5000 CAD equals 3,375 Euro or therabouts. Since your meals and such are paid for on your tour all you'll be paying for is souvinirs, pretty much, right?

Since you don't want to rough it too bad (nothing wrong with that!), I'll estimate about 15 E a night for hostels, interspersed with about 40 Euro 2x a week for B&B's, and a possible hotel. So, on a rough estimate, about 8 nights nice accomadation and 21 regular. This brings approximately 635 Euro on accomadation.

You said approximately one restaurant meal per day (dinner), so, lets say on average, that costs 15 Euro a day and you are at 405 Euro for dinner. Depending on what you do during the day, lets say you spend an average of 5 Euro besides that on lunch/breakfast and there's about 135.

Aside from your food budget you said you like to drink occasionally, so assuming you went out 2x a week and bought 4 drinks at 5 Euro a piece (just a rough estimate not knowing what type of establishments/what you drink) comes to about 160 Euro.

Transportation will vary greatly, depending on where you go, how you travel, how many different locations etc. Lets say you fly to four different cities and spend, maximum, 50 Euro per ticket, there's 200 Euro. Again, totally winging that one.

So, add this all together and you could could say you roughly have 1535 Euro spent on a decent meal and accomadation. Obviously this will fluctuate, so erring on the side of caution, say you have 2000 Euro that you absolutely WILL spend on living expenses, that still leaves 1,375 on splurges and shopping. Just a way to look at it broken down.

You'll be fine! Have a great trip! Yes I have way too much time on my hands.
