cheap staples we eat -
pasta + jar of sauce. cant go wrong.
pancakes - not just for breakfast anymore. flour, water, oil, salt. quick and easy. put cheese and herbs in the mix ... drool.
'puff pastry' pizza - sheet of pastry, sauce (satay if you feel extravagent ), whatever toppings - we usually put a centimetre of toppings on - sooo good.
and finally - in places where cheese and baguettes are cheap : cut bread lengthwise, cover in a mix of pesto (or whatever) and soft cheese, layer on red onion and tomato and grill.

This is a camping recipe, but you can do it on a grill too:
Get a piece of aluminum foil and put some veggies (onions, mushrooms, green peppers, corn or whatever you want), a package of ranem noodles, a can of tuna (leave it out and add more veggies for a vegetarian meal), a dash of garlic salt, add a bit of water (or broth if you have it) sprinkle the seasoning from the noodles all over and wrap everything up into a tight package. Throw on the grill (or a campfire) and as soon as the noodles are done you have a great meal. Depending on how hot the fire is this takes 8-15min to cook.

ok two things, number one: tuna and mao
on bread
in salad
by its self
number two: tabasco
it makes the most boring meat tast good, plain noodles drop or two of tabasco, it's good and a little bottle of tabasco is small but lasts long time.

I hate mayo, but I still love my old poor-college-student staple:
1 can of albacore (white) tuna
a few tablespoons of mayo
1 bowl of japanese (sticky) rice
soy sauce to taste
Mix it all together and chow down. It sounds pretty disgusting but it's gooood and super-filling.

I just remembered my drunken recipe:
3 eggs
cheese
any veggies or meat in the fridge
I call it the miracle omlette because you eat this hammered and it reduces your hangover greatly (protein!). It is also good for a quick meal if you have just a few ingredients
And here is another cheapo:
2 slices of bread (or buins, rolls whatever)
pizza sauce
cheese
veggies / meats to taste/availability
Use the bread as the crust for a "cheap pizza" either in the oven or toster oven. Very quick and easy and tastes just as good as real pizza (wll close anyway).
Chow down!

More recipes that help me save money:
Flour Tortillas
1 can refried beans
Salsa
Cheese, lettuce
Heat beans and tortillas. Make Tacos! Great protein source, healthy, and cheap.
-----------------
Cooking for one person can be hard with wasted food. With hamburger meat I will but a 1 to 1.5 lb pack and cook it all. I make 2 hamburger patties and brown the rest. Fridge it. Great to make tacos, sloppy joe, etc later on in the week. Also good for taking lunch to work that is quick and easy. I also add it to Kraft/Velveeta Mac N Cheese for fast dinner. Options are endless here and its resonably cheap in the long run!
-----------------
Angel Hair pasta or rice
Prego "Garden Combination" Spag Sauce (this is specific cos its veggie filled already and same price!)
Add any leftover beans or meat to taste
Balanced meal on the cheap!
------------------
Toast
Eggs
Grits/oatmeal
Good anytime and very cheap. Better and faster with the flavored instant oatmeal
------------------
Quesadillas
Tortillas
Cheese
Veggies/Meat to taste
Add salsa before eating
Suprised this one didn't make it to the list yet!
------------------
Thats all I have come up with lately!
Keep this thread moving!

Potatoes! French fries, sliced pototoes, mashed potatoes, and boiled potatotes. just have some spices with you for your entire trip and you can put them on any meal. We carry around Rosemary, Basil, Pearsil, Garlic, and Tobassco sauce. Salt is usely found at the hostel. Otherwise bring your own.
If you buy sausage you can just toss them on a pan and in no time they are ready. Easier than cooking rise.
O yeh can'tforget fruits. We carry around a couple oranes, banas, and apples with us all day. Filling, healthy and cheap.

Food stretching..another tactic!
I have recently run into this and its a good idea.
Examples:
Add Black Beans and Salsa to hamburgers when making patties. It is really tasty and makes the meat go farther. I did this with 1 can of beans and 1/2 cup (roughly) of salsa and was able to stretch a 1.2lb pack of hamburger into 7 regular sized burgers. Less fat that way too!
Make tacos and add rice to them. Leaves less room for the more expensive stuff!
Pile veggies high on sandwiches and use a little less meat...or none at all! Subway has been doing this for years!
Create dishes where you can use leftovers to create other dishes or use as a side. Leftovers get wasted all too often (at least for me). Rice is always universal as is potatoes and corn. You can use them for borritos..almost anything works well to make them. Also true for sandwiches! Get creative!
That's all I got right now...

This is what I LOVE to eat camping...maybe not CHEAP but you can do variations of it. I know it as a:
Hobo Dinner
You need:
Tin foil
Vegies like mushrooms, potatos, onions, bell peppers, pretty much anything.
Meat (ground beef is best IMO)
put the meat in the center of a square of tin foil, followed by any and all vegies that you want. Season with garlic salt or just salt and pepper. Now wrap the tin foil around it in some sort of a ballish shape. Make sure you at least double wrap it if not triple wrap it. Stick it in the oven...for a while...dont remember how long doesnt take too long to cook thoroughly. Usually since im camping i just stick it in the embers for 15 - 20 min.
Now I LOVE meat. Absolutely LOVE it. So in Europe, is meat expensive? Like I can eat veggies for a while, but I reallly need meat after a while. If I could just find some chicken or hamburger patties for cheap that'd be awesome. (And by expensive i mean in comparison to the US). Sorry if my question is dumb...

When I was on the road for a month once, My friends and I ate a vanload of Ramen. To spice it up we used spaghetti sauce a few times. It actually wasn't that bad. Needless to say after a month of this delicacy, I didn't eat Ramen for a whole year.

At a hostel, we were dying for "home cooked budget food" so we bought some ramen and canned peas/carrots and sauteed. It was sooo yummy. Ramen is a wonderful versatile food.
Slacker - from what we've seen - cured meat (ham, sausages, etc) are not too expensive. From what we've also seen, red meat (hamburger) is spendy. Come to think of it, haven't seen chicken, but pork based products are pretty easy/cheap to find (again, usually salted and cured but in spain hubby and brother found pork kebabs for a few euro). So, maybe think more along the lines of hot dogs as opposed to hamburders. Literally.
If you have a can of tomato sauce, you can do just about anything. Add noodles/spices and perhaps a few other delicacies and you have a meal. I forgot how cheap/easy lasagne is to make, but how super delicious.
Oh as far as beans go, hubby got me hooked on pinto beans. Heat them up and mash them and they are a better tasting (I think) healthier (no lard or whatever) vegetarian option to can refried beans and cheaper I think. Also, adding corn to tacos is super yummy and a cheap filler. My 2c.

Do most people stay away from meat when they travel because of health concerns? I do not see much mention of beef or pork in your recipes which i think would be much safer than chicken.
I spent 9 days in Havana recently and the one food item I stayed away from was the chicken since it was never refirgerated and i doubt it was fresh.

I save the meat for my meals out and splurges. If I am cooking it is just easier to deal with a can of beans or the like. I will buy sandwich meant or sausages. I'm usually just looking for something quick and filling while on the road.

I generally avoid meat when cooking my own meals because it tends to be an expensive ingredient, and half the people I cook with at hostels are vegetarians anyway.
Safety's the least of my concerns, as I grew up in a household where we left all sorts of food out with no one ever getting sick. However, it's always a good idea to cook everything all the way through - especially ground meats - and to reheat to the point that it's fully hot all the way through. (That said, I like my steaks bloooody.)

Favorite versatile ingredient: JIFFY all purpose flour. Especially for the road, just use dry eggs in place of norm and yuo have anything quick.
For home I find frozen veggies tastier and healthier. Just sprinkle in a bit with your ramen (ramerds where i'm from). Also, u ramen-philes, bullion granules are too easy not to have.

I have a couple more:
Boil the ramen in 1/2 chicken or beef broth and 1/2 water. No need for seasoning pack and add veggies/whatever to taste.
Just add water pancake mix -- costs about the same and needs no eggs. They taste just as good to me and less mess.
Boil in bag rice, frozen veggies (mixed), and teriyaki sauce. Makeshift cheap stir fry.
Peanut Butter, chopped apple, granola (plain in a box), and a wrap. Make a wrap with all 3 ingredients inside. Very tasty and healthy. Good with a side of yogurt.
Keep on truckin'!

WHAAAT!!! You've never heard of the most cheaply manufactered food in all of the land? Many a time have I staved off hunger with the help of that versitlie little noodle. It can be cooked in three minutes, comes in a variety of flavors, and cost as little as 10-15 cents a package and it looks like this...
