my boyfriend just left for europe yesterday with $2000 left after his plane ticket. i'm curious how long this will last him. i've heard that it will probably last about a month, maybe a little longer. i know he's going to be staying in hostels, and probably not spending a whole lot on food, but he does like to drink, so i'm sure he'll be at the pubs and bars more often than not. and also, he's not buying a euro rail pass. he just plans to buy his ticket when he decides to leave one place. thanks for any input i can get on this! : )

Welcome to the boards! Are you going to be doing any traveling yourself?

It could last anywhere from a week (unlikely) to a month (more likely) to two months (less likely). Sometimes people get over there-- especially if they've never traveled before and they're the partying type-- and they go butt-wild, lol.

Does your boyfriend have a return ticket? If so, when is he coming back? Or is it open-ended, depending on how long the money lasts?

wow their are so many variables to come into play, how often he plans to travel is the biggest thing

first let's convert $ - €
$2000 = 1,578€

let's say that he travels once a week @ 70€ that is 10€/day
let's say that he stays in a hostle everynight getting the cheapest possable room that would be avg 23€/night
he has to eat but he can eat cheap at 7€/day
then the drinking if he likes to go to the pubs and he is in and expensive town he could easily spend over 40€ in one night...let's say he is smarter than that and only drinks 4 times a week at 25€ per/night that is 100€/week or 14.29€/night

grand total of 54.29€/day

1578/54.29 = 29.07 days.

so you should have you beau bake in about a month that is asuming he doesn't buy you something nice when he's over their.
hope this helps

thanks for the feedback...and so quickly! i'd absolutely love to do some traveling. i'm dying to visit japan. he does have a return ticket also, but that is scheduled for only 2 weeks, which he plans on just changing(for a $100 fee) once that 2 weeks comes and he's maybe figured out how long money will last him. but even then, knowing him, he might not stick to that date either. i think it'll just be when his money runs out that he'll make it back. he has talked about also that if he likes it somewhere enough, he'll try to get a job. but seeing as how he hates working, i don't think that's likely.

and he plans on leaving england and traveling thru france down to spain. i know he doesn't want to spend all too much time in france. and he would really like to spend a good amount of time in spain. and he also wants to see italy and greece and germany. and i think all the betweens are less important. but i know for a fact he wishes to spend a lot of time in spain and greece.

thanks for input again!!

Well, he's going to have a heck of a time seeing all those places on only $2000. I'm not saying it *isn't* possible, but it's amazing how much moving around a lot will suck up the cash, and to go to that many different countries he'd really need more like 2 months. And the UK-- god, that alone will burn through money like gas poured on a fire.

It really depends more on where he is going. I spent a week in Romania on less than $200. That was eating pizza for lunch and dinner and drinking at pubs every night. So he could potentially stay for two months if he went to romania and budgeted correctly.

I did 3 months France, Spain, England, Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg on well under $2,000. I think the biggest variables are if you are willing to hitchhike, camp, sleep in squats, and not eat at restaurants much. Basically, are you a hobo? If you're a hobo, 2000 bucks is going to last.
