hello folks. i have absolutely no idea how much money i am going to need to bring with me. i figured nearly everything into it, and i need about $650 in gear before i go. if i am going to be gone for one year and longer, how much should i bring with me? i will be camping a lot, and i have no problem with working when in one place for a while.

i am totally lost on how much money i should bring so guidelines would be invaluable to me right now.

Aha...well best bet would be to check out camp site fees...im guessing anywhere from $5-20 a night...then assume you will use those for say certain amount of your trip? Then assume some certain amount of free nights...and add a few hotel/motel nights in for good measure..that's is your accomidation price. Then fill in the details. Food? How are you going to eat? Travel? Bus, hitch hike..what? I think more detail will be needed to get a better estimate.

I have to tell you hitch hiking is not a safe option and I hope you are joking. I know someone who was hitchhiking and got into a car with a young man and wife , both in 20's and nice and happy. This people kidnapped her and held her hostage for 7 years!! Soodomy, rape, beating!!

This is not a lie, hitch hiking is not a viable option. Please do not do it!!

I agree hitchiking in the USA is NOT safe. Greyhound buses are very cheap if you book far enough in advance. Not sure about the Amtrak rail system but I hear it can be reasonable as well. There is also renting a car but I am not sure what the rules are. That's my take on it.
