Talking

Hello everyone!

I have decided to take on a large project that will help us all out when planning our travels. I am making an open call to everyone to provide me with their travel costs. I need as much data as I can get. Here is what I am looking for:

I prefer to have some sort of expense log for your trip. Here is an example:

Initial Airfares (to and from home, please provide origins and destinations): $XXXX
Train Pass (if used): $XXXX
Point-to-Point train tickets (if used, include sleepers and couchettes here): $XXX
Airfares while abroad (please provide origins and destinations): $XXXX
Shelter (all I need here is type (hostel, hotel, camping, etc.), city & country, and amout per night from all destinations): $XX
Food (all I need here is where you got the food and how much, broken down by day): $XX
Entertainment (all I need here is museum costs, gifts, night at the club, etc. Please be specific and broken down by day): $XX
Misc Costs (all I need here is anything that you spent money on that doesn't fit into any of the above categories)

I am going to use all of this data to form a database. Once I feel that I have collected enough information I will make it available online so others can use it to help plan their own trip. I prefer to have all of the numbers in US Dollars but I can convert them myself if you are lazy

The more data I collect the more accurate my information will be. I cannot do this alone! I need everyone that can to pitch in. I can accept data in the following formats:

PDF, MS Word, MS Excel, Text file, HTML, RTF, WRI, WordPerfect, MS Access, E-mail, and posted here on the board.

Please email any of the above files using the E-Mail button on the bottom of this post.

Thank you VERY much in advance,

foofiter

I've forgotten the numbers from my last trip but now that I know you're looking for data I promise I'll keep track of my costs this summer and send them to you asap.
Good luck with that project, sounds like you'll crunching a lot of numbers, but it'll be interesting to see the results.

This is just what I've done in the past 6 weeks, hope it helps a bit. These are low season prices, summer will be more expensive. I go second class.

Ticket IAH to LHR- $204 + tax= i dont remember... $300 ish? December 28 2005
Train Pass- Young Persons Railcard, 1/3ish discount on all train tickets for people under 26. Just show your passport, its worth the £20. I've made my money back already.

Point to Point rail- London-Edinburgh £40 return London-Bath £20 return London-Brighton £15 return

Airfares- London-Rome Ciampano £33 return, but I booked ahead of time. Paris is about the same, Eurostar can run anywhere between £29.5 for a single if you go at like 6 am to £59 for a return. Thats about as cheap as it gets.

Hostels- London: Hyde Park Inn, 10/12 bed dorms from £9 a night breakfast incl. Near Bayswater and Queensway Stations.
Edinburgh- Budget Backpackers, 5-10 minute walk from Waverly Rail Station, £10 a night for a six bed room, comfy and clean. Breakfast £2 or go find your own.
Bath- YHA, £12 a night in an Italiante Villa type place, very nice. Bit far from the Bath Spa station, but walkable.
Rome- Yellow Hostel, 18 euros/night, came highly recommended to me by a gf who used to work there, is right near Termini.

Food- London- I shop in Tesco's and Budgens supermarkets, they are all over the place. If your hostel has a kitchen, you're all set. A kilo of pasta is around £.75 and will last several meals. I get sauce in the jar for £1 and generally add sateed garlic and onion, another £1. This will last a few days. Bread is cheap, too. A loaf of white bread (sandwiches and toast) is £.43, baguettes are £.5. Mince is a little pricier, I dont eat a lot of meat anyway, its something like £1.3/lb. Yogurt is £.2-.6, depending, and with some fruit and a baguette is very satisfying. Milk is £.31/pint. This time of year fruit isnt in season, and costs twice what it does in the fruitstands during the summer. £1 for a kilo generally. Sliced meat is a mixed bag, if you buy shit its £2 and only lasts for two or three sandwiches. I found a great Vietnamese place on Queensway, and eat there every few days. Egg friend rice £1.6, full dishes £2.5. Any american restaurants are going to be expensive, Starbucks is OUTRAGEOUS (£4 for a pannini, oh how I love them though), gloden arches £3.79 for a small meal. Supermarket food is better for you. 4 pack of canned shitty beer is £3 or thereabouts, but I stick to wine. Bottle of alright red will run you £6, the cheapest is this nasty white but its £1.79. Mixed drinks in a pub are £3, pints of beer £3 or £4. 2 liter bottles of water are £.42 at the supermarket, most water in London is drinkable anyway, if not they'll tell you.
Edinburgh- Prices about the same for supermarkets, pubs are a little cheaper.
Bath- Noticeably cheaper, about 1/3 less than London.
Brighton- Went there with friends and went on a bender, six or seven (there is some dispute) pubs in one evening, I went there with £80 and came back with nothing. Some of that was our fancy pricey lunch, but I am sure most of that went to alcohol.

Entertainment- Most museums in London are free. My bars of choice are the Walkabout and Belushi's- full of Aussies and Kiwis and decently priced. £1 shots. Lots of fun. Heaven is a gay club but I had a good time, £7 at the door and didnt buy any alcohol there. Church is open sunday afternoons, games and strip shows and god only knows what else, £7 get you in the door and three drinks. Highly recommend it.
Eidnburgh- I had a great time wandering through graveyards, and enjoying the city, talking to hoboes and suchlike.. I went on a quest to see how many mohawks I could photgraph. The castle is £9.5 but I just walked over the trails all around it.
Bath- The Roman baths are necessary to see and cost £10 I think. I was on a tour so I didnt pay attention. I am still kicking myself for not visiting the costume museum, I think I will go back just for that. There is some really interesting shopping all over the place, take a little cash to spend. Its also near Stonehenge, another must. I dont know how much it costs to get "in," £3 I think, and the shop there has some cool sort of things reasonably priced. I bought a nice handwoven wool blanket for £10.

Misc- London Tube: £2 for a single, £4 for a return, £4.7 for a travelcard which also gets you on buses. I generally just catch a bus, £1.2 for single or £3 for a day card. It seems confusing at first, but if you know where you want to go, you can just look at the maps in the stops. Anyway its more fun.

hope I'm not too specific... I have more info on London than anywhere cause I've been here longer... I think you have a really cool idea, that would help people out so much. Whether I'm actually budgeting or not(usually not, I know I wont stick to it) I like to know exactly what my costs are before I leave.

Ok, here are mine. I'll try to give you as many as possible. Everything is in canadian dollar, sorry. And I'd like to add that for most air tickets, I made intensive research before finding the best price. Maybe the price listed then are not typical enough for your project.

Initial Airfares
Montreal-Frankfort: around $800
Montreal-Sydney: $2500 (one year open ticket with stopover in Malaysia and Francfort, so probably not relevant for your data base)

Train Pass
Avoid buying one in Eastern Europe, it's not worth it.

Point-to-Point train tickets ***
Berlin-Warshaw: $70 (with couchettes)
Warshaw-Krakow: $15
Budapest (Hungary)-Bucharest (Romania) :$50 (international train ticket bought in Hungary allow customers to spend days in any of the stops. Great bargain indeed ! You can visit major cities of Transylvania with the same ticket !)
Bucharest-Varna (Bulgaria) : $24
Budapest-Bratislava (Slovakia) : $25
Vienna(Austria)-Stuttgart (Germany) : $90

***those prices are usually for the slowiest train possible... budget obligation...
***in Eastern Europe, train and bus prices are based on the number of km one travels, and the type of train. I could help you find out about the cost per km in each country if you'd like.
*** I also used the train or bus in the countryside or to smaller cities. I suppose you don't need them, just major destinations, right ?

Point-to-Point bus tickets
Bratislava(Slovakia)-Vienna(Austria) : $15
------
Vientiane-Pakse (Laos) : $8 (local bus)
Pakse(Laos)-Hue(Vietnam) : $15 (touristic bus)
Hue-Hanoi(Vietnam) : $6 (touristic bus)
Haiphong-Hanoi(Vietnam) : $3 (local bus)
Kathmandu-Pokhara(Nepal) : $10 (touristic bus)

Airfares while abroad
Hanoi(Vietnam)-Bangkok(Thailand): $245 (one way)
Bangkok(Thailand)-Kathmandu(Nepal) : $265

Wow, this take time ! I'll provide the rest in another post...

See ya !

Cool

WOW you guys are really pulling thru here. Please be sure to tell me the number of days that you spend abroad if you give me totals. (IE 500 Euros for a month's worth of hosteling). This will help me derive more accurate data. Once I have collected enough data to derive some decent numbers I will post the results. I need A LOT more so please keep it coming!

Sir Skidrage, that is surprisingly cheap, berlin-krakow for $15, while krakow-warshaw is a big $75. Did you inverted them, or maybe you bought the berlin-krakow ticket in Poland ? From what I know, the best deal train ticket one can buy in Germany is the weekend pass for about 20 Euros, and that's for domestic destinations only.
Because otherwise, I was scammed paying $70 canadian dollars for a berlin-warshaw place !!!

Airfare - San Francisco to London/amsterdam/paris in July-August is about $700 to $900. In the off season Oct-March its about $350

Food-Eating at small cheap places and markets, 2-3 meals a day.
Amsterdam: $12-$20 per day
Switzerland: $25-$40 per day
Budapest: $7-$10
Prague: $10-$15
London: $30-$45

Lodging-Hostels, most have a small breakfast included
Amsterdam: $25-$30 per night
Switzerland: $25 per night
Budapest: $11 per night
Prague: $12 per night
London: $20 per night

Rail pass through netherlands, germany, switzerland, austria, budapest, prague for 3 weeks was about $200.

Drinking varies everywhere. Beer is about $3 a pint in amsterdam and about 50 cents in budapest. I usually load up on liquor at the market and toss down a few before I go anyplace in the evening. Whiskey in europe is a huge rip off, so stick to vodka and local beers.

The only thing I can think of right now is that my airfare between Newark and Lisbon was $650 and this was at the beginning of June....

Thanks U2! I will add that to my list. And Cell its never too late. I am gonna be collecting data for at least a year. And for all those others out there! Please chip in. I need all I can get. The more detail the better. I am currently focusing on Europe but will take numbers on any place. Keep the data flowing!

Thanks!
