Well, HSBC is all over Europe, especially the UK. If you have a canadian account with them I don't think they'll ding you for it. And Lloyd's is in the UK as well. Other than that, it's not really a huge problem-- just take out larger amounts in fewer transactions so that you don't keep getting hit with the fees.

How about traveler's checks? Some banks (at least here in the US) offer them at no fee if you have the right kind of account. Make sure you wont get raped on the exchange rate tho. You might save a little if your fees at the ATM are high enough. But I agree with virgin in saying that you should get more in one transaction. I live in the US and faced the same problem I was pulling out 200 Euro at a time on my last 2 week trip and only had to hit the ATM 3 times. Weigh your options and see which is best for you. Hope this helps!

PS: If you are an american express cardholder you can generally get their traveler's checks for free if you go to an AmEx travel office. This is a little known fact that should be utilized!

If you buy Amex travellers cheques and cash them at amex offices that's always comission free.
Also, when using ATM's some banks charge a flat rate and some charge a flat rate PLUS a percentage of whatever you take out.

Your best bet is to ask your bank what International ATMs will support your card. The ATM will probably have to say PLUS or Cirrus on it. (Look on the back of your debit card to see what it says"
My card only supports PLUS, I'm with TD Bank. I had a difficult time in Italy & Switzerland finding any atms that would take my card.
My suggestion is to get a VISA card, VISA atms are everywhere! I can't take out cash with my Visa and I was kicking myself once I got over there.
I also brought 200 euro in traveler's cheques to cover my butt. Which they did end up doing when I ran out of cash in Switzerland.

Right now I'm with ScotiaBank, they charge 2.5% plus $1.50 plus the exchange fee, seems kind of rough. Will look into HSBC though, thanks for the replies.

I would reccomend you check with your bank and see if they have any international partners, Im with scotia and asked if they have people in Oz and they said they did, so I never had a problem with ATM fees, ask and see which European banks deal with your bank.
