Hi. I am going to backpack around north america for 3 months and am having trouble deciding what to do about money. I am taking my credit card and 2 atm cards (one extra for emergency card failure!) but dont know how much cash to take and how much / whether to take travellers cheques. Any suggestions / hints? Thanks.

I'm not sure about how much cash to take - it depends on what cities you're planning on visiting, and costs vary wildly from area to area.

As far as travelers cheques are concerned, I'm not a fan... You tend to get crappier exchange rates and some places are reluctant to accept them. If you have credit/ATM cards, you should have no problem anywhere. We're always glad to take your money!

Are you coming to Atlanta, GA USA? I live there and can help you out with details, etc. Stick to ATM and credit cards. There are ATM's everywhere in the USA. Every town has many. The ATM fees range from $1.50 to $5 USD. Most charge $2.00. Visa and Mastercard are accepted pratically everywhere here. You might run into small shops that dont take them though. Forget the traveler's checks. Stick to cash and credit cards. Let me know if I can help you further!

The amount of $$$$ you need definately depends on where you are going. In the US it can vary greatly, like in California, San Fransisco is REALLY expensive for everything. While other parts of the country, like Idaho, Nevada, and places like that are a lot cheaper. Also, if your ATM card is also a VISA or Mastercard you should be just fine.
