Personally, I'd go ahead and sell the car if I was going to be gone for a year. (but I also have an old car that doesn't cope well with sitting around not being driven.) Just take the bus when you get home til you can afford to get another one! That's my .02c, anyway.

Knowing that in the relatively near future, I'll be doing some long-term traveling, I've wrestled with that question myself. Although philosophically it's always a bad idea to sell to family/friends, I figured if it comes down to it, I'll have to sell my beloved VeeDub to my parents or whatnot - they're in the market for a car anyway, they love my car, and if budgetary things go well after coming home, I'll be able to buy it back. I dunno if that's a viable strategy for most folks, but I think it's one way to more or less "rent it out" while you're gone - kinda like subletting an apartment, right?

I'd sell the car too! However, before doing so, I would exhaust my other options.

Do you have other items to sell before you give up your car? Sell your tv, stereo, nintendo, laptop, leather jackets, baseball cards and comics, used cd's and dvd's, furniture, etc...this may add a nice little cushion to your cash reserves. Every lil bit will help, and all these things can be easily replaced upon returning home.

Sell your stuff on eBay. I know lots of peeps that have made some serious dough online. Or, take your items to an eBay outlet, let them sell it for you, then get a check in the mail (auction drop.

Raise you credit card limits 4-5k. Or just get a loan from a bank, will small monthly payments. This way you'll have the back-up funds, if you need them.

Got a 401k? Take a loan against it.

I'm big on financing...can ya tell ?! I've always gone into debt for travel experiences No one can ever take those experiences away from you...

Then there's always "hard money" loans :greenguy: You can get a loan against your car by giving the title of your car to the lender, in exchange for money up front. You will make monthly payments (you can pay, most likely, online) until you pay it off (probably something like 18% interest, depending on your credit ). At least you get to keep your car and you can find work on your travels, like Dio, to help make up for that monthly.

Good luck

The leather jackets TP mensioned raised an eyebrow, Im gonna go down to the local second hand store and buy one for like 15 bucks and see if I can hit a pawn shop and sell it for 30 Its dirty I know, but I need the cash.

I had a friend that used to go to thrift shops looking for vintage clothes. Once, he found this old black silk jacket that had Neil Diamond on the back in yellow print, and the label said capital records. It was an old concert tour jacket that was worthless to everyone....except Neil Diamond fans world wide! The timing was good because Neil was doing a tour around the same time (4 yrs ago, I believe).

Anyways, bought it for $5.....sold it on eBay for $350! Also, anything new or used (leather jackets, old biking boots, etc...) that says "Harley Davidson" was/is a good seller too.

Everything is worthless...until you know value

g'luck

Um,

If i could humbly interject some reality based thoughts. Coming from a mechanic (which may or may not matter); No matter what car you buy/fall in love with, you can guarantee that it will be the worst investment you ever make. obviously you need vehicles, wait...maybe what i'm saying here isnt going to be of use to you...perhaps the advice not to be emotionally attached to it (your wheels) is. Flip it and get another one if/when you need it...Or maybe just forget i exist?

Best intent, falling short, but yours

I would sell the biotch and put $1k into a special savings account to buy something when you get back....Get a Vespa when ya get back....haha....why not!

It also depends on where you live...big cities with public transportation are easy to get around in without a car....small cities are fairly easy too.......

Its the medium size cities with Shitty or no Public transportation that suck ass to get around in..........

How did "Australia" converted down to OZ? I know that people that were born there are called Aussies but that's like calling the Americans, Amies or Canadians, Canies???
