i'm flying into london may 18th and planning to travel through paris, austria, italy, greece and the netherlands.. i have my month pass and plane tickets all paid for but i'm going to be flat out broke.. so...

sleeping on trains??
camping..? camping in non-camping grounds?
squats...?

i'm vegan and am prepared to eat two small meals and keep dried fruit w/ me
the whole time. i have friends in a few countries that i'll be able to crash with...

20 a day!? anyone done it?

Sijuki 04-26-2004 09:17 PM

Well.. I say, may the force be with you. Anything is possible...

Welcome to the Boards!! I am sure C-dude can offer some commando living tips. $20 might be pushing it.. but I am sure if you really try you can make it.

subdevotion 04-26-2004 09:51 PM

yeah i mean, i could do a little more here and there you know, but if i delete the cost of living (i.e. hostels) or limit myself to like 5 nights at hostels, then cut down the cost of food... i don't know it'll prove to be interesting!

A while ago someone (sorry, I forget who it was) posted a link to Help Exchange, (<---yep, that's a link), where you can find listings of farms willing to let you stay for free in exchange for doing a little work on the farm. Many of them are for at least 1-2 weeks, and I've seen a few that were veg-only farms. Maybe if you get stuck, you can check out something like this?

Also, I'd think you'd be able to find a halfway decent squat here and there, since you're travelling during the summer. Ask around at hostels, and maybe internet cafes. You could also try sleeping in parks. Obviously, be very careful, especially in large cities.

As far as hostels go, many times they have listings boards where you might be able to find temp work for a few days, maybe even in the hostel itself. Or you could offer to do some work around the hostel in exchange for a free night.

Good luck!

check out www.globalfreeloaders.com!!!!!!!!
I am going abroad in 3 weeks and have lodging secured in Paris for the first couple nights. It's supposed to be completely free, but the girl I am staying with is asking for $10/night, which is nothing considering it's Paris, and she's from Finland so I'll get more culture, and we'll get to hang out and I'll have my own personal tour guide in a sense....but supposedly people have stayed with natives all over the world for free.....I hope to do it all throughout Spain too. What an awesome concept for travelers on a budget!

can you tell me more about your choice in screen name, subdevotion?

subdevotion 05-12-2004 08:58 PM

ah thanks, i've saved up some more money, but i'm still interested in working with a tight budget, i dont need clubs or anything alike to have fun, all i need is to see some beautiful culture and scenery and meet rightous people. sn!!!!!!! the secrect unrevealed!?

Carisia 05-15-2004 04:23 AM

Great points Kassandra!

subdevotion - you definitely have a challenge. 20/day in high season can be specially challenging... but if you're willing to camp, tough it out, etc., I don't see why you can't give it a try!

also, you can meet nice natives and they may invite you to their homes once you describe your situation, just be cautious, and also be sure to be respectful so as to give us backpackers a good rep! ;)

I'm vegetarian too and pretty much vegan most times. They sell soymilk in most grocery stores. Most street food in Europe is pretty nutritious. Travel around with nuts, a loaf of bread, crackers, some light fruit, take some Emergen-C with you, drink lots of water, but don't forget to have something of substance once a day, we don't want you getting sick or fatigued, especially since you'll be walking a whole lot to save on that public transportation money once within a city...

Try hitchhiking, but again, be cautious!

Good luck!

porridge.
my 2 cents worth.

damn cheap, and fills you up for a good part of the day.

Don't forget to factor in the devaluation of the dollar into your budget..For my 3 month trip it's cost me $1000...sorry, it sucks

Delaney 06-23-2004 04:30 PM

jw-

Can you break down the 1000 dollars? Were you careful with food, stay in hostels, splurge on drinks? I guess I am asking for more information. I was hoping to be in Europe for as long as possible... I will have $5000. How long do you think that will last?

space virgin 06-23-2004 04:59 PM

delaney, what he means is that the current crappy exchange rate will cause him to lose about 1000 on his overall budget. I responded to your question over in the other topic-- 5000 will probably get you about 3 months, if you're really careful.

Delaney 06-24-2004 09:08 AM

Ah SV, thanks for the clarification! I misunderstood the post. You have provided good advice on the other topic too! :worship:
