Default frequent flyer programs?

question for all you TPers with frequent flyer programs.... I get how it works (in general) but I just wondered if it was worth it for someone like myself.

In general, I take one, maybe two big trips a year and fly CONUS 4-5 times a year. But the thing is, I am not exactly "loyal" to any one airline. If I fly within the US I do try to take American Airlines if the price is decent because I have always had great service with them, especially flying in uniform (got bumped up to first class on more than on occasion! :D ), but flying with them internationally is SO expensive and when I fly internationally, I don't give a shit who I fly with, it's more the price I look at.

That being said, who would I go with? I read about the alliance things, but I guess I don't really get how they work, is the miles thing the same? But I was thinking, esp now that I just bought my tickets to Europe, I should do frequent flyer soon if it's woth it, before I book my tix to Russia and on the trip with my sister.

Also, if I bought my ticket and my sister's ticket in one big purchase, would I get the FF miles for both of us, or no?

Anyhoo, if you do FF and think it's worth it, let me know!
