Hey finnaly going to book a flight this week for the end of septemeber into sydney, and the big plan is to work my way up the goldcoast to surf and party my ass off and do it tll mid december and go back down to sydney for new years eve , I have read several of the posts but I just keep cruching #'s and getting different results, i plan on staying in hostils for the most part and making the majority of my own meals!!and drinking some brews so whats the crowd like? should i book ahead? Do most of the hostils have kitchen's and lockers, do you get your own room or are they big open spaces how are the showers and washrooms, I was also courious about transpertaion, is hitch hikking a bad idea? do any of the hostils have boards for rent? So I have figured i need about 75 auz bucks a day im not sure if thats to low or to high, so I guess thats a few questions Eh!! So if anyone has done the same kinda thing and has some ideas id love to here from yah

IMO the $75 a day should be pretty comfortable as long as that doesn't include your alchohol. If your going to pubs a pint will cost you around $6, nightclubs you will get a bottle of beer for around $6-7 and bottleshops a six pack goes for around $10-12.

Hitch-hiking is illegal in Australia so there isn't a big hitch-hiking "culture" in my experience. So do it at your own risk as you might be picked up by the cops or left standing on the side of the road for a while.

At the very least I'd reccomend booking your accomodation for New Years in Sydney as it is bound to be packed.

I'll probably have some more info for you later but I'm already late for uni.

Good Luck

When I went to the Gold Coast, hostels were around $25/night... booking ahead was recommended since it was around schoolies, but most of them don't stay at hostels anyway, and it's not going to be an issue when your'e going.

I ended up staying at the Surf n' Sun in Surfers Paradise, and as far as partying goes, they always had these specials (i.e. $5) for all-you-can-drink punch followed by free cover at a local nightclub. Best bet was to buy a carton of beer and hang out by the pool and find out where everything cheap was to be found... Which generally is how it worked out for me pretty much anywhere along the coast.

Other than "special" days (i.e. my friend's wedding, me & a friend's birthday, time set aside for shopping) I don't think I spent much more than $60-$75 a day, including drinks. Find out where the specials are!

If your looking for a way to get between Sydney and the Gold Coast (or vice-versa) JetStar and Virgin are the two budget airlines in Oz. Booking ahead is recomended, if not required.
