Just curious, does your bank charge when you withdraw money from an ATM in a foreign country?
Both my German and my UK accounts charge when i withdraw abroad. €3.50 for every transaction on my German account, not sure about my UK one. I know taking out as much money as possible it a way of stopping that, but being in 7 different countries sometimes just for short times, like i was on my trip, thats not really useful. i lost at least €30 on withdrawals. It really pisses me off, especially when its the same bank, in the same currency!
I know that Nationwide (UK Bank) doesnt charge you, i think thats the only UK one that doesnt. anyone know of any others?

I know HSBC DOES charge, which is why I just opened a Nationwide account, I can't be doing with getting charged to spend my own money! In addition, Nationwide doesn't charge for payments made using the card either.

No matter how you go about it, you will not get out free traveling to another country, using another currency. My bank charges $3 per withdraw (when I take money out of an ATM overseas) and 1% of the total cost when I use it to buy something. If your bank doesnt charge you the ATM you use still might and there are also conversion rates and things like that to keep in mind. I am sticking with my bank when I travel and just taking out a good amount from ATMs everytime I withdraw instead of $20 here and there like I do in the states. Also am going to bring along a bit of USD $ for emergencies and maybe $100 worth travelers checks for extra emergencies. Cant ever be too prepared!

Yeah i was gonna mave to the Nationwide, but seeing that im probably only going to be in the UK less than a year i longer think i'll just stick with Natwest. Id only be moving my debts over anyway, and im not planning a holiday outside of the UK or germany in the next year anyway.

Yeah I am with Nationwide much better than HSBC- worlds local bank indeed!

I am with Netbank and they Charge NOTHING for any ATM use anywhere. I also EARN interest on my FREE checking account.
