I was just wondering what u torrent is like and how legal it is, as it seems like something I would be interested in having.

I'm not sure about how well it runs, but for th legality issue that only matters in what you decide to download with it.
If you're downloading opensource programs and software (Free to use, distribute, modify etc etc) nothing is wrong with that....
But if you're downloading the new X-MEN from a guy who sat in the movie theatre taping it....that's a different story. :D None of the software is technically illegal or anything. It's just want ya decide to do with it.
*Goes to d/l some music* Ha ha, I am evil...

uTorrent, first off, is a better version of the simple Bittorrent client.
I use it, it works fantastically.
I had this explained to me by a coworker (I work for an IT Consulting firm, specializing in Cisco and other internetworking technologies): The concept of a "torrent" is that there is no centralized repository where this file is "stored". Unlike P2P programs, you're not literally copying the item in question from another persons harddrive. What happens instead is that, as you download it, you immediately begin to fling individual bits of what you've downloaded at other people requesting that item.
When all of these bits are fully assembled on your computer and they take the form of a copyrighted file (Some_metallica_song.mp3) that you did not pay for, then its illegal . However, the sharing process (which is generally where you get nailed) shows you sharing little chunks of it...which is not illegal
Legally, what you're probably wondering is "will the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) be kicking down my door anytime soon, and sue me for a million dollars?" . Not anytime soon. Probably the best way--and bear in mind I am not condoning the digital theft of copyrighted materials--to avoid any kind of litigation is to keep a low profile. Its not good PR to nail the nice guy who happened to download "DareDevil"; it IS good PR to bring down the guy with 8 Terabytes of copyrighted DVDs stored on his server.
uTorrent itself is not illegal, and it works great IMO.
Did I help or overcomplicate the matter?

Go to a site like Torrentz.com and search for what you want... it'll lead you to another Torrent site that has the torrent file. Download the torrent file. Open it with uTorrent... the file will start downloading. Pretty simple
You can also use apps like BitTorrent, Azureus Magnet, etc. etc. etc.

dah, i hate utorrent. When i first got it it worked beautifully, and then one day it just stopped. 0/ks all the time. I wondered if the issue was my settings so i tried the exact same file with bitcomet and it was going soo quick. I know bitcomet isnt rated as high as utorrent, but it never lets me down.

Various clients are banned by various torrent trackers... Dunno why, but they are. So it's good to have several clients on hand, or to change the TCP port they go through.

i use bitcomet, always worked well for me. The problem can also be with your ISP. Some companies actively cap p2p activity. After i moved out of my last place to Toronto my speeds were way higher.
