iPod headphones

hey, this is a kind of wierd and random question, but my friend told me that i was crazy for thinking of taking my iPod with me to europe.. i dunno what she thinks iPods are for, but pretty much the only time I ever use mine is on plane, train and car trips - so I can't live without it when I'm travelling. anyway she said everyone listens to music on trips, but having white headphones makes you a target as people recognise straight away that you have an iPod and therefore have many other exciting new gadgets to steal. I think she's being wierd and paranoid, but i was wondering what other people think about travelling with iPods?

heh. totally forgot the point of my post. another friend, overhearing the iPod conversation, said i should just get a pair of crappy, non-descript, black headphones and use them (and keep the iPod in my pocket or bag at all times). should i bother?

Okay, since my iPod headphones broke a long time back, I have a set of Sennheiser's I bought for $20. they do the trick, are non-descript, and I guess satisfies your idea.

But again, even having headphones assumes to the would-be thief you have something, anything worth stealing. It happens in NYC in the Subways (police have gone so far as to suggest alternatives to iPod headphones as a result) where iPods are getting ripped off left and right.

i listened to my iPod constintly in Europe, White head phones and all, and I never had the slightest problem

I would get some Sony Earbud headphones (or similar) they're tops!

Mugging is now the largest type of crime in England now.. i wouldnt risk it!

I rarely go anywhere without my iPod(s) - they're just too damn necessary in my life.

As for the headphones, yes, it's wise to dump the telltale white earbuds, first off because of the thief factor, and seconly because they SUCK-DIDDLY-UCK, Flanders!

Even my $5 pair of bottom-of-the-barrel Sonys that I used to cycle through like mad sound better. However, I think it's worthwhile to invest in a decent set... I'm currently sporting a pair of $40 Sony in-ear ones - not unlike the expensive Shure and Etymotic models. They're not audiophile quality like the aforementioned models, but when you're listening to compressed music, it doesn't matter THAT much. In-ear headphones are great for sound isolation and increased bass response, but they will block out a lot of external sound, which could be bad in some situations. Also, they tend to have an "echochamber" effect like being underwater - while the music is loud and clear, so is your own breathing and any other noises like the wires banging around under your jacket. Just an FYI..

I have white headphones for my MP3 player but its a Creative. And theres no way in hell im going to go get some other cheaper pair, cause Creative's have the best sound I've ever heard out of buds. Ill just run 'em inside my shirt and keep the player in strapped to my arm.

i have carried my ipod everytime ive been abroad and never had a problem, but i also carried a roll of quarters in my pocket when i went on subways/sketchy trains just in case
