So, how much does it cost to get online? I don't plan on uploading any pictures (my camera doesn't even work, so why take it?) I just want access to my e-mail. Some hostels seem to have it, but do they usually charge or is it free if you're staying there? What's the normal "rate" in cafés?

Could you remind us where you plan on going ? Fees vary from country to country. $10/hour in Germany, $0,25/hour in Laos...

In Western Europe the average price is about 1 euro for 15 or 20 minutes. Most of the places I stayed in had the internet but most you had to pay for. I did stay in a hostel in Nurnberg, Germany where they had free internet, but only one computer so there was often a line.

Sorry! I'll be in Western Europe, likely not East of Austria (though not positive, of course)

I regret not getting a digital camera sooner. I got one in December but I didn't have one when I went to Europe in the summer. It would have saved me tons of money developing photos and buying film and I would have been able to take more pictures.

Mark-0 has good/average prices for western Europe. It's not too spendy. You can check out libraries too as they sometimes let you use it free (in Germany we had to pay like .50 Euro per half an hour). Some hostels have free internet, but get in line! Some also have pay internet which is about the same price as the cafes. They usually do specify on the site.

I would if I could but I'm already spending pretty much every cent I will have, and plenty I'm borrowing from family, on the trip, so I don't have the money to pick up a decent camera. Oh well, maybe I'll bring my current, barely working one. It takes pics eventually.

Can you ask around and see if you can borrow one from a friend? You don't want to miss out of taking pics, plus you can convince someone to lend you theirs by promising to take special pics of something they really want to see.

Yeah, man, ask a friend to borrow theirs. I've done it for friends and I'm just as happy as they are when I see their pics upon return.
At the very least, get the email addys of everyone you meet so you can get copies of their pictures with you in 'em!

a friend lent my best friend his digital camera when we went to florida last year...big mistake! he would have left it on the coach on the way to the airport if i hadnt spotted it! then he got drunk one night on daytona beach and lost it, along with his money and a ring hed got from his grandparents (he has no idea what happened - he disappeared for a couple of hours then we eventually found him sitting on the street as we were driving back to the hotel!). man his friend was pissed!
but yeah its a good idea, but definitely take more care of it that if its your own!

if you are near a university they might have free internet. I'm sitting here right now in the student union of wake forest university typing this for free. However there is no place (that I can see) to upload pics.
