I am trying to burn DVDs from my computer, using my DVD burner. I figured it would just be as easy as ripping music from regular cds but it isn't. Someone told me you have to download a DVD burning program but I don't know which one! Any free ones that anyone can tell me about?

There's a site in the UK called Ebuyer if you could find something similer you could get Nero with all the trimmings for about 5-10. It was so cheep I bought two.
The reason it's so cheep is that it's OEM. That means it's supposed to be sold to the like of Dell or Compaq to be bundled with a new PC. You get nothing but the cd though.
Just look out for OEM software it's full featured and really cheep.

Greetings citizen from the West, I will let you in on how I do what I do with DVD's.
2 steps:
STEP 2: Write the DVD
I suggest using Nero 6 Ultra. But you can download the trial to Nero 7 here : Nero 7
Basically what needs to happen is when you add files to your DVD you must create 2 folders on the DVD: on called AUDIO_TS and the ofther called VIDEO_TS. All you have to do is copy ALL the files from the temp folder where the compressed DVD files is to the VIDEO_TS folder on the Blank DVD. The AUDIO_TS folder is left blank, and then you click "burn" and then you just wait!
Cheers!

for real dvds I use nero and simply use the "copy dvd" function never had a problem....for creating dvds I use nerovision express. wrks great. you just drag and drop the video files you want to burn, create menus, etc. no nonsence.

See this stuff here is the reason that I like to date computer nerds! Because I don't know shit about this technical stuff.
Ok, to the DVD Shrink expert!! Question....when you are making a back up copy, does it have to encode the dvd?? I am doing this right now and it is taking about an hour it says...is that correct? That seems like a lot of time to simply make a copy of a dvd. Or am I just not doing it right. I was trying to make a copy of my dvd using Nero, but it wouldn't let me do that either, saying that it isn't compatible with Windows or something.
Anyway....I'll just keep on trying and see what happens. I need a computer nerd boyfriend though asap.

Hrmm.. I've never done this stuff on Windows, but an hour seems about right - DVD compression/writing takes FOREVER (think about how much data is on a disc compared to a CD) and the read/write times in general are slower than on CD-R drives, so yeah, it's expected to take a while... Copying DVDs is something I usually set up to do while I'm off doing something else.

Yeah, the encoding and compressing takes 30-80min depending on your DVD-RW speed, so that's normal. As for the nero incompatibility with windows.... well it's possible that your Operating System (Windows) is rejecting nero due to conflicting software issues. That's not a major problem, as long as you find any DVD-writing software that works and follow the instructions I laid out, all sould work out fine. In your case I hope to god you don't need a firmware update, because it is almost impossible to find firmware upgrades for certain burners.
That set aside, if the original DVD movie has a file-size of less than or equal to 4.7GB then compression is not needed. And you could copy the DVD files to your PC then burn them to a DVD like ripping music, but once again certain writing software protects copyrighted material as others over-rides it.... GOOD LUCK.

Ok, you're never gonna get a computer nerd boyfriend saying stuff like that. You gotta say how you're ripping the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy or a directors cut of Tron

I'll give that a try....the whole Trilogy of Lord of the Rings would probably reel me in a computer boyfriend in no time.
Especially if I figured it all out by myself.

Ye're all Pirates! I'm reporting ye to the coast guard before the terrorists get in and steel our churches.
Smartripper is another good free ripper, not that I use it! The dvd copies in about 20mins for just the movie it's exsactly the same quality as the DVD and always fits on a normal DVD. You can also do full backups which is handy for foreign language films.
Does anyone know how get subtitles on a copied DVD? I just need to know for research purposes, know your enemy and all that.
