Just Found Skype. this would make sense to me if you take your laptop with you. Basically you use a mic and speakers on you computer to talk to someone else with the same for free. if you want to call someones phone it would be .023 cents a minute for international calls. I'm going to set this up on my computers to see how it works. might be useful on a trip.

The parental units seem unable to use a phone card to call me without incurring hundreds of dollars in charges and I seem unable to find the cheapest possible phone card on my end.

The latest versions of Yahoo (Windows version), AIM, GTalk (from Google), and iChat (Mac) all offer voice chat features... and the aforementioned Skype is the king of Voice Over IP. Pick one that you and your 'rents already have and you should be all good.
