Hey everybody,
I'm really excited about a camera I just ordered. It's called a Holga. It's a medium format camera and that comes in different models and are Soooper cheap! They have a plastic lens and often at times they have light leaks. Needless to say they create some interesting and crazy results and they have a worldwide cult following. Check out some googled images if your interested this lo-tech Russian beauty.Holga

Holy low price, batman!

I like the results I've seen on the web - reminds me of a low-rent Lomo or something. I've wanted a Lomo for a while now, but it looks like Holga may be the way to go!

Very cool stuff!!

My only beef is that I've been using digital for so long now that once I start racking up film costs I'll probably freak out.

You're not alone with your beef, Pinion... but with such a low entry price, it seems like a reasonable way to test out a hobby and see if you'd be into it or not. If you buy the camera, some film, and lay out the cash to develop your first sets and don't like what you see, you can chalk it up as a relatively small loss... right?

Thats very true...I think I'm actually going to consider grabbing one of those cameras. I'm going to read up on them a bit first, I can see it being one of those things I get bored of after about a month.

I was tempted to get a holga a while back. But decided against it has I heard that medium format is expensive to get developed. Im too used to digital aswell to ever try film. But holgas are still tempting - they take amazing looking pictures. The photos remind me of old family photos where everyone is wearing dodgy 60s/70s clothes - think it would be very interesting and alot of fun to capture nowadays with one.

Maybe I've over-thought this, but I'm thinking the best way to approach this Holga thing is to simply get the 120 film developed into negatives (and save money by not getting prints...) And then using a decent scanner (they're so cheap now!) with a transparency adapter to bring the stuff into the digital format to tweak/print/etc. Am I being too geeky about it?

Looks like I opened up a can o' worms.
I think at best, this would be a cool camera to experiment but like Space Virgin said, the entry cst is cheap. I found a place here in Ga that will develop and print for $9. So with film it would come to about $11. Not too shabby. Of course, Omisan mentioned scanning the negatives. This would be a good route to go. Either way, it's all for fun.
