hey all,

ok, im leaving for London in bout 5 weeks, I have a 40gb iPod i would like to take, to ward off the boredom on a 23 hour flight and trains, buses etc....

whats your guys experience with these? i mean, how likely is it, that it will get stolen. I dont mind sitting with it while it charges (up to 80% in 2 hours) which would be the most high risk time of getting it stolen.

but anyway...what do ya think?

I think safety is 90% about being smart - thus if you are smart it is very unlikely to be stolen. So yea, I'd take it - that is what its for!

Belkin makes a battery pack for the ipod too. It takes 4 AA batteries that are available everywhere and I own it. A full charge + the pack gives you like 16 hours of play time. Just get the pack and use batteries. Less risk!

I always travel with mine - never a risk, as far as I'm concerned. Just don't wear the tell-tale white ear buds when you're out and about. I did that once, on the New York subway, and this guy looked like he was sizing me up... dunno what his intent was, but it's better to go with a pair of black, non-descript headphones so people don't know it's an iPod in your pocket.

yeah, good point omisan, i have done that myself...not with any malicious intent though, seen the ear buds and gone "oh look, that guy has an iPod"

problem with a 40gb one tho, is the size, i mean, its a tank compared to a mini. what have you got?

in nz it was

$435NZD for a mini
$620NZD for a 20gb
$609NZD for a 40gb....makes sense huh

so i got the 40gb, i have only used 5gb and thats my entire music collection....overkill really.

I've got the tank of tanks - the original 5gb.. Still smaller than a lot of others on the market, but with my black case on it, it feels like a brick. I also have a 512mb Shuffle, which I use for more active pursuits. I think before i make my next big trip, I might have to invest in a Mini... or possibly an iPod Photo with the new digital camera adapter cable so you can directly dump your photos into it when you're traveling... gah, more crap to spend $$$ on. I should really focus on just paying for my airfare right now

If you don't mind a bit of work you can make one yourself. It shows you how here.

Checked baggage! You shouldn't need the booster-pack on the plane. Or take the batteries out Actually, through an X-ray, it shouldn't look too different than most other electronic components.

It's not a problem. In my carry-on, I generally have my I-Pod, AA battery pack, ziplock with extra batteries, battery powered noise reduction headphones and digital camera. I haven't been searched once and I have been back and forth to Asia about 5 times in the last 6 months or so. I am not sure what that says about the security screenings though.........how easy would it be to fit a bomb into an I-Pod case??

Maybe he was just checking you out. Hahhahahahaha
That happened to my friend in New York...he was like "what's this punk looking at?"....and then he realised he was being checked out... heh heh

But i digress

Yeah do you think its even remotely safe to recharge the internal battery in a hostel? Or would you have to, like, tape it to your arm or something?

Ok, so I am so goddamn paranoid about my ipod getting stolen in S. America this summer I am really leaning towards not bringing it.

I don't know what the hell I'm doing; I'll be all over the place probably in hostels, staying with people on couchsurfing.com, etc.......I just don't trust people entirely I guess and if there's no place to lock stuff up in a hostel (and hell, even if there is)......

I mean, I love my music, but I got by in Europe last summer for 2 months without any kind of music player just fine......AHHHHH!!!!!!!!! I don't know!!!!!!! I would CRY if it got stolen!!!!!!!!! A lot!
