Hey, I just got this email from my dad :FYI office depot is selling a nikon coolpix 2200 for $196 instead of $350. It has 4 megapixel, 12x total zoom, and 16MG card.
I've wanted a digital camera for a while, but is this actually a good deal? What should I be looking for? Any info would be majorly appreciated!
I know there is a post about this somewhere but I have no idea where to look.

wow - that sounds like a great deal!
you'll have to buy an additional memory card - but that's the case for most cameras. and 4 megapixels will provide for some amazing pics.
check out the battery type (lithium, AA...), ease of use and video capability.
also look into store/manufacturer warranty.

stay away from cameras that only have digital zoom, you loose resolution and pictures you use the zoom on won't turn out as good as with an optical zoom.
like cali was saying make sure you weigh out batteries. lithium batteries take up alot less room, but the good thing about AA is that you can buy a pack at any corner store.

Thanks for the advice... I looked at the Nikon website, and either my dad got the number wrong or the stats wrong, cause the 2200 doesn't look all that great. So it looks like I am still looking for what I want, and suggestions if I want ease of useablity, lightweight, high memory, good resolution? I want to use this as a substitute for my 35mm, for every occassion. Thanks so much for the quick replies before!

I would definitly go for one that uses AAs. While on the road, the less that eeds charging the better. My Canon A70 is average at this point, but it suits my needs fairly well, and I think they sell them now for about 200 dollars or cheaper.

I went with AA as well, I actually just picked up the A80 a month ago.
If anyone is looking at buy a dig cam, I highly reccomend checking out Cannon's line. Very good quality cameras!!

Ok, let me try to get this straight (I am about as techno savvy as most grandmothers )
I want pixels, what is the minimum for decent resolution?
I want memory, I've mainly heard of 512?? cards, do I need to buy that separately?
Optical zoom is when I do it manually, and digital zoom is when the camera just blows up the pictures? I know I want more optical zoom, but what are good stats?
Lithium batteries take up less space, AA are easier to get: not yet decided on this one.
I don't want to be one of those people who go into BestBuy and picks the camera thats prettiest, or the one that the salesperson is getting the biggest commission for: I want a camera that isn't too expensive but will still suit my needs. Thanks so much for all the help, sorry I'm so dense on this tech stuff.

I am not especially digi camera saavy....but there are some tutorial web pages at the Best Buy and Circuit City websites that walk through the basics, like megapixels, memory, zoom, etc. on digital cameras. Here are a couple, I think these will help a bit:

Circuit City

I would definitely look at battery life and rechargeables. I have had rechargeables and are glad. Next to no probs findin a power pnt. Having to buy batts all time would costa small fortune and a nuisance. unless u get cam with a long battery life
the extra weight of carrying a recharger beats this stuff

Me too, but that was cause I could never control them. Have you ever heard of the memory card? I dunno if that would mean that I could/couldn't get more memory or if I would even need to.

I believe with the Compact Flash Memory you can buy as many cards as you want (in different memory amounts) and once you fill one up on a trip, just pop a new one in. Here is a link to where you can browse prices for various sizes:

hi phlipfudge23..
like pinion, i highly recommend canon powershot a80!! excellent value for those who want an easy to use, fully featured yet compact 4MP digital camera!!
and i'd say go for the AA battery as well !!! this is specially handy for travellers.. you can easily get one when your battery wears off.. i got myself a rechargable 2100 nimh batteries for my a80 and it takes dayssss of use before recharging.. and the one i got takes only an hour to recharge...
another important (well, to me at least) feature to consider is the vari-angle LCD monitor.. really cool!! great help for self portraits!! offers more shooting angles!!
i suggest that before you buy, check for reviews on the net first.. below are some reputable sites that do camera reviews..
http://www.dpreview.com/
http://www.digitalcamera-hq.com/
http://www.steves-digicams.com/
http://www.imaging-resource.com/

hope this helps..

The Nikon looks pretty good....
4 megapixels ought to get you pretty good pictures, especially at 4x6".
The 3x optical zoom is alright, I don't remember what the last few I looked at were, but they were probably similar.
The compact flash cards can be bought separately in many sizes. (16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and 512) You can interchange as many as you want. Then when you get somewhere you can upload them, you can clean them out. Depending on the length of your travels and how picture crazy you get would dictate how big of a card you would need. If you just take a few pictures here and there, the 32 or 64 would be more then sufficient. If you are like me and take pictures of anything and everything that catches your eye, i would shell out the cash for the larger one.
The only two other things are battery life, and you comfort level with carrying it around, A camera that fits nicely in your hand and is comfortable to use is important, at least to me.
... and that is my 2 cents.

No dice; I asked my dad to go ahead and get me one; TOTALLY SOLD OUT! Even the Canons that they substituted! So back to my original plan of asking for money earmarked for a digi (that way I can't weasle out of it and save the money, but I can wait till the price for a decent one goes down) or looking for another really good deal.
