Hey I'm going backpacking to Portugal in a few weeks and taking my digital cam. I'm wondering what others have done with their pics. You see I don't want to be limited to taking only 150 or so pics, so how do i get rid of them without deleting them until i get home so that i can keep taking more?? Can i dump them off at an internet cafe computer, email them home and get my fam to save them on my computer?? I dunno... what should i do?

Hey Charv...

Firstly Welcome to the boards...

Secondly, on to your question. Im going to be one of the few this summer that wont actually be taking a digital camera, but from numerous debates, heres some suggestions.
1. Drop into a photo shop and have your memory card emptied onto a cd rom. I believe this is quite cheap, and obviously a good option.
2. Start up an online album and you will find internet cafes that will allow you to upload your pics onto the site. I belive yahoo do this, as well as a site called photobucket, which i know a few guys on here use. Either way, just be sure to bring your camera software and leads for uploading.
3. I guess three is not really an option, but have you thought about bringing a couple of memory cards. A couple of 512mb cards will hold a million photos. (well not quite a million

)

Ya OZpacka has got it right, a mem card that can hold tons of pics is the best solution. Trying to get your pics onto a net cafe pc could be more hastle than its worth, cables, sofware permission from the staff...bla,bla,bla...

You might be able to gte lucky and find a good photo mat that would have a memcerd to cd system.

My adviose, Take the pics, bring them home and download them here...If you were gone for a few month, you would have to put a litle more effort in, but I think you'll be fine!

I don't know how much hardware you have, but if you have an iPod there's a great deivce called the "iPod Media Reader."

You plug the media reader into the iPod and then you plug your flash card into the media reader. It then transfers all your pictures onto your iPod.

Its so great! I just picked one up the other week. I'll have to warn anybody they aren't cheap, about 150 CAD.

I reccomend this to anyone who has an iPod and a dig cam! and a little money to burn. lol

The media reader is the way to go for me, but the only model compatible with my iRiver doesn't support my Canon camera. I am going to have to get a USB reader for my Compact Flash card that I can then plug into the media reader to transfer photos to my MP3 player. An easier way would be to just use a PC to transfer pics directly to the MP3 player, but I unsure if the net cafes allow you to do this.

Hi Chary, welcome to the board!

I personally would just buy another memory stick. Because then, it doesn't take ages to fiddle about downloading the pics onto a pute at a cafe, and you can use it again when you go away! If your going only for a few weeks, you don't want to be wasting tons of time trying to sort out your pics. If your going for a few months though, its an option to pop into a photo shop or cafe.

Hey, if you can afford, just buy a new memory card for your digi cam, you can upgrade to 300, 500 or more pics that you can store! This way you don't have to worry about deleting, uploading, etc.

Even if you go the other route of dumping the pics into a CD in a local photo shop to make room, or uploading it to a website, it'll still require $ from you and the price of photo services and internet services range from city to city, so I really think you'd be better off taking a really large memory card and taking care of development, etc when you're back home.

Hey! Thanks for all the replies everyone! It turns out my brother is going to loan me his memory card for the trip!! (What a guy). So I'll have both mine and his to use, (I'm so paranoid of losing them!) But I think this will work the best. If I start to run low at the end of my trip I'll pop into a photo shop and get them put onto a cd, hopefully for a decent price.
Where in Portugal am I going? Well I've chatted with my backpacking partner's sister who went there a few years ago, and she suggested a few cities that are a must see:
Farro (capital of Algarve beaches?)
Lagos(party city)
Sintra
Nirave
Lisbon (capital city; oceanarium)
Anyone else have any suggestions??

I only went to Portugal for 2 weeks, but I stayed in faro, and did all of the Algarve. If you can, venture elsewhere than the Algarve. Have a smashing time!!!

Memory is so cheap these days I still had plenty leftover from my last trip and I took hundreds of photos!

And sure beat the h*ll outta carrying dozens of rolls of film, too!

it really depends on what resolution you shoot at and how many pics you plan on taking.
I shoot at super fine reso which results in large file sizes (but amazing resolution. I've printed 11x17 prints and they looked great). if you shoot at high resolution, more memory cards aren't the answer (for example I get 100 shots per 256 card). with the prices constantly going down, a portable storage device like an image tank is something to invest in (some you can even use as an mp3 player or portable cdr drive when you get home).
