Default Fast camera!

after browsing the threads about cameras, im still undecided on a Digital camera choice. The bigger Digital SLR's are neat cause they have all the gadgets of james bond, but..
Wont they make you stick out like a sore thumb? screaming " im a tourist come nab my camera!"
beyond that, im still looking for a rugged medium sized camera for around 200 bones, that has a fast picture speed, (nothing bugs me more than clicking to take a picture and waiting 5 seconds for it to actually open the shutter and nab the moment.)
what are your experiences with cameras and their speeds? and any other info would be great!
thanks in advance

I would love to have a nice big-lensed camera to take great photos with, but I have been pretty uncomfortable pulling the thing out to snap pics with, especially on the street or in a busy area, where you can get some of the best pics.
Unfortunately I don't have any good camera suggestions, I'm looking for some advice as well. A friend of mine recently bought a sony cybershot (I think?!) and I was trying it out, and noticed it had a super quick power button and shudder response, as well as a huge LCD screen. I was impressed. But for general travel purposes I would look for something small and high quality.

I take my SLR with me when I travel, but that's because high-quality photos are (one of) the point(s) of my trips. I'm not worried about sticking out like a sore thumb; chances are you will anyway. With the new camera bags designed to look like, well, NOT camera bags, it's easy to carry one around and not look like an asshole. Just remember to be aware of your surroundings, and most of all, be polite and discreet when snapping away.

However: unless you're REALLY set on investing the $$ into a big camera in order to potentially make money from your future photographic endeavors, just take your trusty point & shoot. They can't be beat for portability, compactness and stealth. In order to get high-quality photos with an SLR, you need to invest in good lenses (cha-$$$$$-ching) and it's actually a lot harder to get a good shot than with a point & shoot that does all the work for you. It takes a lot of practice and know-how and almost always a lot of work in post-processing. That said, if you're willing to put in the time, effort and hard-earned cash into it, it's worth it.
