Default International Cellphone Rentals?

I have been researching for the best rates for renting international cell phones, has anyone used a certain company before and been unhappy/happy with it?

Thanks!

I don't frequent my cellphone usage abroad but I have AT&T and we got an international plan for when I was en route home and leaving deployment (cos we stopped in all sorts of countries and using phone cards on a pay phone is KILLER on the minutes), and here's the info...

Also I know when I was in Afghanistan, Kyrgzystan, Kuwait, and Qatar, you can buy a SIM card and minutes from locals, but if you've got AT&T you have to physically call them to unlock the phone, which is fine, it's free, just a hassle. You don't have to have any kind of plan, it doesn't even go on your phone bill. I dunno about other service providers, but yeah.

Hope this helps!

I appreciate the info but I do not have at&t and I already have a plan with a different company.

Thanks anyways, I'll keep it in mind if I decide to switch.

What I would do is buy a GSM phone(one that AT&T and most every other non-american service provider uses). As long as it has a removable sim card, you can use it just about anywhere.

For instance if you get to the UK, decide you want to use Vodaphone or something. You buy a vodaphone sim card, grab some minutes, and you're good to go.

I've decided to go with that. I have already bought a GSM phone on ebay that says it's compatible with the international sim cards, now do most of the sim cards I can buy in EU have text messaging included in their prepaid plan?

Unlocked phone + prepaid sims = the right idea.

Plans vary hugely. LeBara, in Holland, has amazing international rates, but sucks locally. Optus, in Australia, has higher prepaid rates than a number of other providers, but offers prepaid plans with included data xfer (bring your hacked iphone!). Some providers will give you more texts for your money while others give you more minutes; some even make you chose which is more important and change the plan accordingly.

If you know where you're going and what you'll need, let us know and we may be able to suggest specific carriers. If you're not yet sure, just know that you're doing it right and that you'll find plans that work.
