WiFi Skype phones

I'm just after getting my hands on a WiFi skype phone at work. The main difference between it and other Skype phones is that it connects directly to any wireless networks without the need for a computer or software.

It just got me thinking that maybe it would be handy for cheep calls when abroad. Most places these days have WiFi and some places even have it for free.

Skype credit is cheap so maybe it would be worth while to take one of these phones. Problems are you can't use it in emergencies or outside a WiFi networks so you'll be unreachable until you make the effort to call out. Which could be a good thing or a bad thing.

Do mobiles work without minutes for emergency calls? I think they do here in the US, but don't quote me on that.

Regardless you could carry both, and put like 5 pounds on the mobile and then have the skype deal. That sounds like an excellent deal to me for traveling abroad. Especially if you can find utilities online to locate free wifi locations.

Takes a little while to load properly...I'm sure you could find a million GoogleMaps that do the same thing

I'd assume they'd be required to by law.
