Question Vonage V-Phone?

Has anyone tried this? Turns any computer with high speed internet into a phone, unlimited minutes to Canada, US, PR, Italy, France, Spain, The UK and Ireland for 40$ a month? I'm curious, because if it's as good as it sounds, then it would make a lot of sense for my trip...

Oh, and you also don't need to have any software on the computer so you can use it at any of the intenet cafe's with no problem... and it comes with a headset... Anyway, sorry to double post, just curious...

I've heard of it but have no experience with the service. I usually get pre-paid phone cards if going out of country and then limit calls to just letting family know I'm not dead. For longer communication I use e-mail though. I guess the value would depend on how much you plan on using it while traveling.

*laughs* I have a mother who worries when I leave the province.. So email isn't going to work for her... and I tend to enjoy yammering and I don't know how long I'll be gone for... I can understand it being too much for some people, but I can easily say I'm going to need to make 3 or 4 30 min (minimum) phone calls a week... Plus this way they could call and leave me voicemail (which would be great...)

I haven't used Vonage, but another service you might look into is www.voicestick.com. Similar idea, but the calling plans are cheaper. You can make unlimited calls to the US/Canada for $19.99/mo (or use prepaid minutes).

Another cool feature they have is "Global call forwarding." My friends can call a local US number and it rings my mobile here in Iraq (or anywhere else I happen to be). If you're going to be in the same place long enough to get a sim card, it makes it easy for people to get in touch with you. It's free for them and .15/min for you.

I'm sounding like a bad radio commericial, so I'll stop there.

someone also makes a skype phone that works on wifi and is about the size of a celly. it is a media player and i think a camera to, i thought about one of those, sony makes it, it is called the mylo, and if you buy one you get a year of free t-mobile wifi access, which means any starbucks in the world

http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/01/h...the-sony-mylo/

what i like is the built in wifi finder on the side

If you're dealing with monthly charges then it doesn't seem like it would be worth it if you're not constantly traveling. Now, as much as I wish I were constantly traveling, paying a monthly charge for the service seems like a waste when I'm stuck at home working. What I do is use a prepaid OneSuite account, which you can refill whenever you're about to hit the road again. They also have a VoIP service which works in the same pre-paid way as the calling card, so it's convenient in internet cafes, too.
