Good question c0urt! I was wondering if it is better to do Skype or just stick with msn/yahoo?

I use skype and it works great. You are better off taking your own headset since that seems to make all the difference.

We used to use Skype in Lithuania, and loved it, but here in Germany we only have dial-up so it doesn't work so well.

Very frustrating.

I was thinking about Skype recently. If you have your own headset, are hostels geared up for people to use Skype from their internet computers? Seems like a pretty good way to stay in touch.

Hey c0urt
I'm thinking of getting a ibook. What do you think of yours. Does the built in mic really work well?

I use skype all the time to call people from the DR. It works great if you have high speed internet. And you can't beat the price either! It's so cheap to keep in touch with your friends and family while you are traveling.

i love mine, the only problem i have had in the past year is i broke a power supply, and unfortunately it is a kinda common problem. the new macbook has actually solved this problem but i dont want to plunk down the cash on something i am going to have in my backpack for the next few months. i do recommend jumping up to atleast 768 mb to a gig of ram with which ever one you go with. I will gladly be a mac evangalist for anyone who wants to listen

//i hope that made sense

I use an iBook 1.07 gHz G4 with 768 mb of RAM too. It is pretty decent. It lhandles all the basics easily, so if you're just trying to browse the web, chat, use office, that sort of thing its fine. They're very cheap now too. I would wait a bit before you got a MacBook though, if you decide you want a more powerful laptop...they've been having some weird problems with the hardware so far. Wait until a new revision is released.

Oh yeah, Skype. Skype is really nice but not too many of my friends/family have headsets yet so it isnt the best option for me. Sure, they're cheap, but most of the people who I talk to regularly just prefer calling cards.

Ok this has nothing to do with Skype, but since we are talking apple books I was wondering if you guys could give some advice. I've decided to buy a new comp and I want to go apple. I've had it with PCs!!!!

My old one was always freezing on me and I've heard that apples are better protected for viruses. Anyway I was thinking of getting a 13 inch Mac book.

Vp you said to wait on the Mac book. Is that for money reasons?

Anyone have any suggestions? Should I go for the 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo or the 2.0 GHz? It comes with 512MB of ram. That is what I had in my last computer. Should I update it? Also does anyone know the difference between Combo Drive and Super Drive?

Here's the website at what I'm looking at. HERE

I'm basically going to use it for holding my music, surfing the web/ email, editing my digi pics, and for college stuff like writing papers.

thanks guys

the reason he said hold off on the mac book is because it has been having some strange hardware issues, and the black ones stain for some reason. the combo drive is a cd-r burner and the super drive is a dvd-r burner. I personally wouldnt notice the diff between the 1.8 and the 20 gig processors but i would try to get at much ram as i could swing for, i mostly use mine for editing photos and writing and running stupid amount of processes at once. and i appreciate the ram.

but on that note the mac book is pretty awesome and i want one to, i would just feel bad if something weird happened to it

and yes this stupidity is powered by a mac

Thanks c0urt So dumb question but the ram is so that you can have say multiple windows opened at once, right? So what is the storage? Is that mega-bytes? (sp?)

As for cheap calling anyone ever heard of pennytalk? My bf uses it call him mum back home. As long as you call a landline it is really really cheap. I think he pays 2 cents a minute to talk to her. He puts the money on the card and refills it when it is low.

yeah ram more or less allows your computer to do more things at once. it is the area where the computer hold information while working on stuff, so you could compare it to having to do long division on a tiny piece of paper and having to erase it before you could do something else, versus having a big piece of paper to do division on and doodle in the corner and surf porn at the same time

Yeah I meant some strange hardware issues like court said the staining...also the LCDs have some weird effects like being brighter on one side than the other...basically its all new hardware from Apple, so you are probably better to wait a few months until the next revision comes out and they fix some of these issues.

That said, the MacBook is a very nice laptop, if you are going to buy a new Mac now, you want an Intel-based mac...and the only intel-based laptops currently are the MacBooks.

I use Axmate! Zango is too low key for me, looks way too 8-bit gone wrong.
