Teaching English Overseas
What kind of visa would one need to teach English to foreigners in London? I've already been on a working holiday visa so is there any other visa option?
I don't know much about this teaching abroad adventure thing so I'm going to start googling but any help or advice would be great.
PS - I'm looking for specific advice regarding visas for the UK to teach English. Please don't give me a home office or migration expert link because neither of those websites give me the info I'm looking for.

It depends on the country-for the UK I would think you would need a standard work visa which can be arranged through the school but personally, I would get my own just in case. But yeah the ESL cafe CAN help although there are some people (including myself) who have done the ESL thing before and any help I can give I would be happy to.

Hey Ben (or anyone reading this) did you try tutoring privately for cash in hand instead of working at a private language school? I've been reading some posts on ESL cafe which say you can get 30 quid an hour per student doing it that way.

I TRIED but was not successful but that was because I live in a small town and while there are a lot of Poles they have a club and people to teach them English. In a city like London you may well do better although there is a lot of competition and if you've not taught professionally before it could be hard. You definitely wanna get some sort of TESOL before you start.

I want to do it legitimately and get the qualification and experience but I was thinking it might be a handy way to top up my income. I could give a couple of classes in the evening after my proper job.

Ah I see-thats actually fairly common, while I was in this one school in Poland I knew of guys who had business on the side. I don't know too much about the ins and outs but one thing is-be discreet and do NOT teach students from the school you're working in-they may view that as poaching.
As I say, dunno too much about that aspect but I do know it has been done.

So does having a TESOL/TEFL qualification mean you can get a UK work permit without having sponsorship from an employer?

No, the qualification can only get you in the door of a ESL company. They need to write the final letter. This is only my experience from an American passport though. Maybe Aussie is easier?
