I'm looking into teaching English abroad beginning sometime in the fall. I've basically hit a wall as far as figuring out what the hell I want to do with my life and figured I might as well earn some money living overseas. Who knows, maybe I'll love doing it and I'll have found the career of my dreams.

From my initial research it seems that SE Asia offers the best pay to cost of living ratio and greatest opportunities for employment. I've set my heart on Thailand but would be open to any country where I could live comfortably off a teaching salary. Has anyone here taught English in that area of the world?

Also, been checking out the various certificate programs. It seems for SE Asia a TEFL cert with classroom training seems to be all that is necessary. Is that accurate?

I got a TESOL and found it was enough to teach in China. In some countries a college degree is required like South Korea and Japan I believe.
I got mine from TEFL International and while it may not have been the greatest program ever, I have some good memories.

I don't know what it is like in Asia, but I know it's pretty competitive in Western Europe. Most places want recognized classy certificates, like the Cambridge or Trinity College TEFL certified. These are month long commitments that cost about 900 pounds. They are difficult, but with them, you can get a teaching job very easily. I only have a dinky little online 40-hour course. I cant tell if it helped me get my job working at an English language day camp in Germany, or not. But normally, I think the more hours the better.

I know this might seem a silly question but considering the high number of non English speaking immigrants in England would it be possible to get a job teaching English in England?

Not unless you have a qualification in it unfortunately!
