hey guys, i'm a 19yr old (turning 20 soon) aussie and i'm set on backpacking europe at the end of the yr. I plan to stay for the most part of next yr (2007) just working my way from here to there etc.... as i am travelling alone i am a bit unsure about how i will survive.
one query is... how do i get a job to last a while.. and live somewhere, so that not all my money is blown on accomodation. i mean, could i honestly stay in a hostel for 2-3 months....?

i used to live in the UK and plan to work there for periods at a time... then embark on trips round europe. however... how easy is it for an english speaking male to gain work elsewhere in europe..

It depends on what kinda work you're looking for of course, and every situation is different. My buddy got a job as a bouncer at a bar in Rome (The Drunken Ship) when he was over there for 5 months. The bar mostly attracted students from the States, Australia, UK, and Ireland, so being a native english speaking person helped. So thats what I would reccommend, use your English as an advantage soemwhere.

As for the hostel question, I don't know what to say there. I think most of them have limits on how many nights you can stay in one. I guess you could move from one to another all throughout whatever city you were calling home for the 2-3 months.

There are a few books on the subject, the bible being "work your way around the world" by Susann Griffith.

If you're willing to work in the countryside, fruit picking is the easiest option, and you can find fruits to pick all year round.

I know some travellers find work in hostels, in exchange of free lodging, but you'll need to be able to speak the local language.
