hi
This is my first post! I'm planning to quit my job and travel. I just haven't decided where to. I'm thinking about TEFL as an option but I don't know if I'm qualified.
Is a degree necessary to teach english overseas? Would a TEFL certificate be enough to get a job?
At the moment I have a college diploma, which is kind of vocational rather than academic. Although I'm capable of university work and this diploma would give me access to the second or third year of a degree course.
I was thinking about taking a TEFL course somewhere in Asia. I'm interested in China.
Any advice would be appreciated? Thanks.

Yeah you will be fine
Its the TEFL qualification that counts when looking for teaching work overseas, regardless of if youve got a degree or not. my brother left school at 16, then did a TEFL course and now works as an english teacher in poland

My girlfriend did a TESL program in British Columbia and then taught in Peru for a while. Anybody know the difference between TESL and TEFL?

it depends on where you're going. it helps to have a degree, and in some countries they won't even look at you unless you have a degree.
tesl cert. is just a bonus.

There are only a few countires where you can legally teach without a bachelor's degree. China is one. There are a few others in SE Asia. You can do independent teaching (go there, put an ad in the paper) and not worry too much about the visas, but in order to have a safe, gainful job, become legal to work (most schools will do that for you). Some people will take you with no experience, but your compensation will be based on that. You can get TEFL certified online. With no bachelors, I would recommend that as it will give you bargaining power and make it easier to get a job.

EFL = English as a Foreign Language
TESL = Teaching English as a Second Language
TEFL = Teaching English as a Foreign Language
TESOL = Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
ESOL = English for Speakers of Other Languages
