Hi there! The words "needle in a haystack" come to mind... I'm not sure that anyone here is going to have any leads for you about jobs, but some more info would help. The "california area" happens to encompass an enormous chunk of the United States, so it would help to know what part of CA you're talking about. And also what kind of job you're qualified for. If nothing else, a lot of times restaurants and catering companies need dishwashers and they *may* be willing to pay under the table.
Ask around at your hostel or check the bulletin boards around there - you'll often find jobs for travelers posted, many of a, uh, semi-legal status. If you're in LA and staying at the Venice Beach Co-tel, the bar/club downstairs hires travelers at times...
