Working in Oz?
Hey Tpunks. I am thinking of going to try to get the working holiday visa in Oz. Is it tough now to find a job there? I haven't completed uni yet but I do have cash handling and customer service skills.
I would probably like to work reception in a hostel or maybe a teller at a bank, though you can only be with an employer for 6 months so not sure if a bank would hire me.
Are there any "bad" months to arrive in Oz re finding a job?
Can't recall all the Tpunks for have done the working holiday thing, if anyone can name a few maybe I can try to connect w them on facebook.

Yep I'm here right now and I love it!!! I got my visa very quickly, and got all sorted and settled quickly too. I found a place to live for pretty cheap in my first week here.I did take my time looking for a job though. I was kinda lazy I used this site www.seek.com.au to see what was available for work, and I spent an hour or so emailing and applying to jobs from that site. I waited another week and then got a bunch of calls for interviews. I ended up with the job I wanted and I love it!!! It's not a bank job, but I did recieve offers to work in a hotel at the front desk. There isn't really a "bad" time to look for work here, but It is a bit harder when school gets out cause all the students are looking for summer jobs. Even though you can only work for an employer for 6 months, some are ok with firing and rehiring you so you can stay on longer. They have their loop holes. Thats what my jobs gonna do (I hope they rehire me lol). If you have anymore questions just ask. I've only been here for a month and a half but I am starting to feel at home.

I also have another question about working in Oz so i'll add it to this thread, hope that's ok! I really want to go back over there and live and work there (am American) but I've already been over for a year previously on a working holiday visa so I can't get another one. Does anyone know of how I can go back and work? Or what companies could sponsor me? I have a degree in communications but I'm willing to do anything that can provide a steady income and let me legally live and work there. Thanks so much!

You can't get a job in a bank unless you are a permanent resident, but look out for temp jobs in admin or retail... Also lots of Bar tending/waitressing jobs (which are easier to get)
Hassie
Try looking for a big US company (like General Electric) They tend to let you apply from o/seas...
