Default Going to Canada on a one way ticket ... Via LAX

I am planning to live and work in Canada next year on a working holiday visa. I am worried about trying to get in as my one way ticket flies from Sydney to LAX then another ticket to Toronto that night (cheapest way - saving me $1000)

I'm worried because I've been travelling to the USA a lot lately - 4 entry stamps on my passport this year and once last year and on my last entry which was into Dallas, I was taken into a room for questioning. I'm concerned that they have a lot of information about my travel on their computer (most shocking was that they could see how much I've paid for my airfares!) and im paranoid that they might think I'm trying to stay in the USA despite my documentation for my intentions to live and work in Canada.

Then upon arrival into Canada I will be questioned before being issued my visa. My boyfriend is a Canadian citizen and I have no intentions of staying in Canada past my 2 year whp visa (we will go to Australia). So do I just fail to mention him completely? USA immigration was nosey about him asking if I intend to marry him to which I replied it was none of their concern. But if canadian immigration catches wind I'm dating a Canadian then will I risk being refused entry??

I know I'm paranoid but my past experiences with immigration is less than desirable but today I opened up the newspaper and read about an Aussie being refused entry into London. I can't help but see this as an omen or warning of some sort...

Advice anyone?

Canadian border crossing is not nearly as crazy as American. I dont think you'll have much to worry about in Canada. They'll understand that you're just visiting your boyfriend

Are you living at your boyfriend's place while in Canada? If not I don't see why it would even come up unless they directly ask you (and in that case I would tell the truth...)

For US customs just make sure you bring a copy of whatever approval you have for the Canadian visa and I'm sure that's fine.

Default Change of plans...

I managed to find a flight to Vancouver for a comparable price thus eliminating the USA immigration problems...

Would 3.5 hours between flights be enough for me to:
1) go through customs and immigration and get my work visa granted (I've allowed for approx 2 hrs)
2) collect baggage (approx 30 min - surely if it takes 2 hrs from landing it won't take long to collect?)
3) recheck baggage (1 hour prior to take off)
4) go to gate and board my plane to Toronto?

It's either 3.5hrs or 10 hrs and I'm already doing a 20 hour flight from Sydney to Vancouver via Auckland so less time to get to Toronto the better.

I would be getting into Vancouver 2 weeks prior to the Olympics and have to go to the "Voluntary Compliance Area"...

My friend's boyfriend did the Whistler thing last year and he said all up including lines it took 1 hour to get the visa approved.

Worst comes to worse, if I make it to the gate 2 hours after the Toronto flight leaves, Westjet will let me fly for $50 standby on the next flight... But I am not keen on spending 10 hours in Vancouver Airport...

Thanks!
