After visting England for a few weeks this summer I decided to make a very drastic and possibly idiotic though life-changing decision. I was planning on going straight into grad school after this year, but would really like to take a year off to live overseas (since I can't afford to study overseas).

Anyone know of a good way to find work or internship opportunities overseas, specifically in England? I'm looking for something that involves writing, literature/humanities, or education. If anyone has any insight I'd really appreciate it...

I can't stand feeling like I'm missing out on important life experiences by slaving away in school any longer!!!!!

Not sure about volunteer opportunities in the UK, but if you want to work bunac.org is a good way to do it.

The program helps you with the visa formalities and provides some support in getting settled in with a place to live, apartment, finding a job, etc. The fee is pretty reasonable, about $300. For the UK you must have been a student with at least 8 credit hours the semeter prior to going so if you're graduating you'll need to head off right away!

You could get a TEFL and teach English overseas.

Or the Peace Corps. I think you can get grad school credit, plus some loan forgiveness.

England is a tough road with their visa regulations. BUNAC will set you up fine though.

Australia/New Zealand both offer 1 year visas. Not sure about anywhere else in the world though.

speaking of visas how much do they run? such as the Australia or new zealand ones? and where would you find the best info on this?

I do remember one of the American students I met in England said there was something weird about the visas, like she had to jump through hoops to get one that matched up with the time she would be in school. I don't remember, sounded like a bitch though.

The first website does sound like a great option. Just have to wonder what kind of job I might be able to find. These are scary and stressful decisions, but I have a feeling I would regret it more if I just went straight back into school instead of taking the opportunity to get out of the country when I'm young enough not to be tied down to the "real world."

I think most people just get bar/restaurant/retail type jobs...not really so much to work as a professional, more just to be able to live there and have some kind of income to support them.

But you could get anything. There are somtimes restrictions, I know in Australia you can't work anywhere more than 6 months at a time.

It's 180AUD for Oz, and I think the same in NZD for New Zealand.

Whats your major? You can find bar work, I about guarantee that. There are probably more pubs in the UK, than in the entire U.S...

I would say go for it though. I am going with enormous amounts of student loan debt. But, I have enough to get me by for at least a year, so I'm doing it.

Money is so overrated anyway

I'm studying English, which is why I was hoping to find something that involved education... wanna get some shit to put on my resume. But, if bar work is the best bet I can always use it to help me get ideas for writing and such. Any experience is good right?

Money is totally overrated... you've got the rest of your life to pay that shit back! Plus, who wants to rush into responsibility. Certainly not me!
