Cruise Ship Employment

Hey, I was wondering if anyone out there has worked on a cruise ship. Whats the best way of applying? I see a lot of recruitment agencies online? Any feedback would be great!

Hey, Depending on what you plan on doing the money is terrible! If this is a plan to see the world, don't plan on it. In most positions on a ship you never even get off the ship. Also, unless you are Captain, or something in that rank, you have a cabin below deck 1 that has up to 8 beds that should really only hold 1 or 2. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have

I know to an extent that the living quarters will be tight, long work hours and that I may never get to leave the ship. I would really like to leave the city and not having to worry about finding a place to stay appeals to me cause I kinda still have to pay for the apt I'm living in now.

Depends on your job onboard. If you are working in a low-level position like a waiter, don't expect much free time. Often times the guy serving you breakfast is also bringing you a margarita on the pool deck, then your steak at 7pm. The accomodations are often very basic, and the pay ain't great. However, if you are lucky enough to nail a high-profile job like a bartender, DJ, fitness instructor, etc. then you're going to have a bit more fun and make more money.

If you are looking for a kitchen job, don't even bother. Trust me here, it ain't worth it for the amount of work you're doing unless you're the exec chef.

There are links out there on the boards that offer info, but keep in mind its not the best way to see the world (more like the same place once or twice a week for the next 6 months or so.) Additionally, most cruise companies require a contract that is legally binding to prevent you from going bamboo at your first port of call. Lotta gray area, so be careful and do a lotta digging before settling in.

Has anyone delt with recruitment agencies...I found one that is based in Vancouver, no fee to sign up. I noticed on many of the cruise lines they name companies that do the hiring for them.

Also about the medical test..what are they looking for?

It varies I'm sure, but the overseas companies I've worked for wanted general physical and dental exams. They just want to make sure you're healthy and won't require a lot of medical care or anything while you're away. Western-standard hospitals aren't always available, and having to evacuate someone back to their home country is expensive...

Drug tests are also popular, at least with American companies.

Hey I'm not sure if the one your talking about is www.pmcmarine.com . But I know a few ppl who have been hired thru them. They are legit.
