Canadian in Ireland?

Hi. I am a 26 y/o Canadian female planning a long wandering trip to Europe for next year (Starting in July). I am really interested in Ireland and would love to spend some time there working... I am more interested in the smaller cities or towns as opposed to Dublin and the like. I was just wondering what kind of jobs would I be most likely to com across, and is there what, if any training or job skills should I try to aquire before getting there. Most of my experience is in medical and non medical homecare for disabled adults. However, even though I have been working in this field for the past five years... I don't have any official certification. I was wondering which jobs are easiest to get and what my best options for finding one is. Thanks for the help!

There's always the good ol' hospitality industry to fall back on. Do you have any serving and/or bartending experience? That's a good way to at least make some cash while you look for a different position more suited to your training.

I've worked in restaurants before.. I would **REALLY** love to work in an Irish Pub... Put I don't know how feasible it is that they would be interested in hiring a random Canadian girl with no bartending experience.:P Do you think taking a bartending course would help?

^ If your'e not hideously ugly and even only mildly charismatic, they'll most likely be happy to give you work. Bartending courses-- I've said it before and I'll say it again til I'm blue in the face-- are about as effective as wiping your butt with the money and flushing it down the toilet. Get yourself a decent bartending book and you'll be fine.

99% of drinks you'd mix are standard cocktails: martinis, gin and/or vodka tonics, cosmopolitans, lemon drops, manhattans, etc. Really easy stuff once you get the hang of it. In Ireland it's quite possible that beer is going to be more what you're pouring anyway.

and the liquor drinks are all pre-measured too so that should make things easier

We stopped at a hostel in a small town in Ireland (Drogheda) and there was a Latvian girl who was obviously mid backpacking and working in the restaurant/hostel.

Fair play to you, you'll fit in grad with all us buffers (county folk) out here in the west we all hate Dublin too.

There's not much call for cosmopolitans around here, if you can pull a pint you'll be grand. If you need to practice I'd be more than happy to drink the pints you've poured until you get the hang of it.

The country is crying out for anyone with medical experience, I think officaly you would need to have some sort of certification but check out some Irish medical sites and see what the storey is, there's such a lack of people in that field here that you could get something.

I'd say your best bet is in the hospitality sector though. visit Google.ie and do a search for jobs in Ireland your bound to find something.
