I am a europe based pro-busker. Forget spain and portugal. Busking is now illegal in spain, in portugal you are a beggar. Classic or pro-instrumentalists can make it in major cities like London or Paris. There are permits to get. For popular music and intermediate players, try mid sized German or Scandanavian cities. In Holland try Utrecht or any beach cafes. South of France, like Tolusse, works for some, but there you compete with gypsies and beggars for the tourist money. You need street smarts. In Czech, you may be popular, but the money ain't worth much, especially if you wanna save for your next hop.
Always play terraces and pass the hat. Put on a 4 song show, about 15 minutes, walk back and forth so everyone sees you a few times. Then approach each table with a collection hat/jar. Try to ask in their native language and the local tounge for small money for the music please. This small effort will make a huge difference at the end of the day! Don't "sit & play" with a begging bowl out. If you do, expect to average less than 5euros an hour.
Feel free to post more questions. I am based in Amsterdam and travel alot to busk. Almost never do a proper club gig. They don't pay enough, usually just drinks!. I play acoustic guitar and sing. Supported myself since 2000 by guitar in Western Europe.

welcome guys!

I'm a big fan of buskers......not beggers or gypsies. It really does become part of the culture in some places to stop and listen to someone or hear music for instance at a patio or cafe, and I appreciate the talent most people have that do it.

I do have to say though I disagree with confronting people and asking for money after you've played, that makes you no different than a begger. If someone wants to pay they'll pay, and I realize a lot of people are cheap and often times dont realize that they should pay if there going to listen but theres notthing worse than someone asking for your money...especially when your travelling yourself.

peace.

Haha...no hard feelings meant. I play guitar myself and by no means am I an accomplished guitarist. All I mean is if I'm going to give money to someone who's making money by just playing an instrument on the street they better be impressive!

Like in mannshands case, some people can make a pretty good earning at it if their talented. I just think so many people do it more as a pity gig than anything and thats not getting a buck from me.

Good luck on ya.

hehe, naw be smart get a sampler and do recorded loops and samples press plat with the knobs and you'll be amazing! (Again I'm joking) I play Bass and drums and percussions I was even the lead singer (for an Emo band therefore yes I have an awful voice) but even with a harmonica I've done money, hhum I should try and see if the kazoo pays as well.
