Evening guys! I'm going on a RTW trip in November for 6 months and my final port of call will be South America. I've had my head stuck in guide books for months now and this is the only place I feel quite apprehensive about going. Is it a safe place for 2 women to be? Is it a safe place for any traveller to be? I don't mean to come across as being naive and ignorant, but would welcome some travel advice/some positive stories from people that have been. I'm so far taking in Santiago, Lima, Cusco (Inca Trail), Iguazu, Buenos Aires and Rio. Thanks!

yeah no worries... there have been some reports of near-rapings of chicks in clubs but that happens everywhere. Stay with your hostel group and be aware of your soroundings and you'll be fine!

Yeah.. it's not like we're all a buch of ignorant-natives running around like a Spanish-speaking Pokahontas you know...
You'll be fine as long as you behave reasonably (ie: not getting mad drunk on a Friday night and accepting a ride back home from 5 random guys you've never met...)
Just be smart about your surroundings and you'll be absolutely fine. It is true that at nightclubs some guys are a bit "too friendly" and if you dont follow their lead they get annoyed and annoying, but with a firm NO you'll be fine, that or you just pretend to be totally into your friend and get lost in the crowd.
But really... it's not that different from other parts of the world.

Thanks! Sounds like a normal weekend at home actually, except that this place IS full of ignorant natives!! Think it was just the government websites etc going on about crime rates. Really looking forward to coming- looks really beautiful.

I've been to all the places you listed and there is nothing to worry about in any of them. There definately are places to avoid in the cities, but that's the same in any city. Just be slightly sensible, or have slightly sensible people with you, and you'll be absolutely fine.
Have fun

wow you guys are great, i feel better myself knowing that the safety there is overrated, i hate it when gov' or some travel guides make it sound like it's so dangerous. But isn't it everywhere?

And I think we also wil have to go to Colombia and maybe Brazil! We also wonders and hope that it is safe there for 3 twenty years old girls! We have never travled like that before, so it`s quite terrifying actually! But we look forward to inkatrail and stuf! We are going there from march to april this year! And I really feel we have planned to little!! So some advice had been greate! (sorry my english are so bad!)

Welcome to the boards as well!
I'm heading to C & S America in June for about a year. Pretty much just be as careful as you would be going out for the weekend. Like everyone else has said...watch your surroundings and know where your drink is and the like.
I think the only country that is really "iffy" if you want to call it that is Columbia. I've heard there's a lot of unrest there but I'm sure if you just plan around the "bad" areas it should be fine.

On the other hand many of the packers I met in brasil and argentina told me that columbia was their favorite of all the south american countries. The small amount of tourists that aren't afraid to go are treated amazingly well and things remain extrememly cheap due to the unrest of the warring guerilla factions in the Darien Gap.
