Hello, I am planning on taking a backpacking trip around South America next summer after the bar exam in July and was wondering what the weather is like at that time. I know the rainy season is during the summer in the southern hemisphere, but what about aug, sept october? Is the rain during these months unbearable?

Hey,

I'm planning on going around the same time, June-July. From what I'm reading, the seasons are reverse there so we'll actually be going during the Winter. It looks like the temperature varies a lot depending on altitude, country, etc. It doesn't appear that it'll be the rainy season either.

When to Go to South America

As it stands, I think I'll bring a pair of shorts, a pair of jeans, a sweatshirt and maybe a light coat. If temperature necessitates a higher coat, I'll buy it there.

I went to Peru during summer and it was cool but jeans & tshirt were fine in Lima. But in Cusco and at Lake Titicaca it was pretty chilly and down as low as the 30s (fahrenheit) at night. Even in the chillier high altitude places during a sunny day you'd probably want to hike in shorts though. So you're going to need to be prepared for a variety of weather.

We did Argentina in Very Late Aug - Mid Sept this year and it was hotter than our summer up the top at Igauzu and in Buenos Aires was warm enough to walk around in a t-shirt and shorts, just needed a light jacket at night.

I travelled around South America from August to November a few years back and I don't remember the rain being a problem at all. However, I was drunk a lot, so this may not be a very accurate take on the weather during that time.

I´ve been living and working in quito for almost two years. I have worked at a well travelled Irish bar and a really good hostel and through these experiences have met and pointed a lot of people travelling in ecuador in the right direction based on the locals that I have made friends with-

The weather here is pretty much nice most of the year. We are supposed to be in the rainy season at the moment but so far blue skies and sunshine are the most common things to wake up to. If you are looking for suggestions for places to visit or cheap ways to go to the Galapagos or travel from heree to points north or south, let mew know and I will get you the information that I have. I have created a group on couchsurfing called "ask fin in quito" after the name of the bar I work for, Finn McCool´s- I also created a facebook page under "the secret garden,quito", where I put the answers to the questions that are most commonly asked at the hostel. hope your plans are shaping up and drop me a line if tyou need help!

Thanks for the responses in this thread, frm what I have read it seems that Aug-Nov(ish) is a good time to travel in south America because you will avoid the rain and the crushing humidity. I still want it to be warm along the coast, so hopefully it will be.

I'm heading to BA June 10th - June 20th. Looks like it's going to be chilly, between 40-60 degrees.
