I know this might be a bit late, but....

I didn't go to Montanita's, but I stayed in Mancora which is another surf break/town south of there, in Peru. I met a lot of travelers on there way down from Montanitas who all said there were a few super cool hostels, and that it was a good place to hang with hippies and get "wasted" on whatever. Didn't hear many people rave about the surfing. I actually met a few people that ended up coming back to Mancora after a few days in Montanitas.

Whatever that info is worth.... Goodluck!
